  13. I did a fresh install of #dump1090 yesterday on one of my #ArchLinux PCs.

There is an improved version in the AUR, but it didn't compile, so I made some small changes by hand.

It is amazing what distances you can cover with a small passive TV antenna and a ~10y old TV stick...

  17. Reloaded card with latest OS
    Reloaded dump1090-fa
Reloaded all the various sundry feeder scripts
Loaded log2ram in an attempt to minimize writes to card, so I don't have to keep doing this.

I MUST NOT WRITE. WRITES ARE THE SD-CARD-KILLER. WRITES ARE THE LITTLE-DEATH THAT BRINGS TOTAL CARD OBLITERATION. I WILL CACHE MY WRITES. I WILL PERMIT WRITES TO REMAIN IN MEMORY AND THROUGH ME. AND WHEN THE DATA HAS GONE PAST I WILL FLUSH THE DATA INTO THE ETHER. WHERE THE WRITES HAVE GONE THERE WILL BE NOTHING. ONLY STATIC DATA WILL REMAIN.

  25. I wrote a little program to read ADS-B data from dump1090-fa port 30003 and check if any aircraft nearby get within 0.75 NM and 750 feet of each other, and yes, it happens frequently.

The most alarming is KBUR passenger jets flying over various students in the pattern at KVNY.

These two had 725 feet and 0.696 NM of separation:

I installed dump1090-mutability because it was available via apt. I see now that there are a host of dump1090 forks out there, so an additional question: What is the most useful/recent/correct #dump1090 please? Is it github.com/MalcolmRobb/dump109? #ADSB #rtl #SDR

Yesterday a v4 RTL-SDR arrived and I plugged it in to my vintage (2011) imac running Debian Bookworm.

Unusually, I read the RTL-SDRv4 quick start guide, compiled and installed modules etc. 🙂

Results of putting the little dipole on top of my shed roof, ends 275mm apart, vertical orientation, center tap skywards:

    Statistics: Wed Mar 20 08:18:07 2024 AEDT - Wed Mar 20 09:18:07 2024 AEDT
    Local receiver:
    8640266240 samples processed
    0 samples dropped
    0 Mode A/C messages received
    3258882 Mode-S message preambles received
1015775 with bad message format or invalid CRC
    2180640 with unrecognized ICAO address
    58857 accepted with correct CRC
3610 accepted with 1-bit error repaired
    -42.5 dBFS noise power
    -23.2 dBFS mean signal power
    -3.7 dBFS peak signal power
0 messages with signal power above -3dBFS
    Messages from network clients:
    <snip (there's none)>
    62467 total usable messages
    0 surface position messages received
    10065 airborne position messages received
9531 global CPR attempts with valid positions
    <snip>

Does that look OK to any RF wire benders out there? I don't mean *optimal*, I mean; I haven't even troubled gaffer tape, wire or a hot glue gun yet, what I mean is, *good-enough*. WHY so many errors and lost messages? It seems wasteful.
Summary is 3 million preambles, but only 62 thousand usable ones? That's not right, ... is it?

  39. 📻 ✈️

My current ADS-B receiver is running on a Pi 3, and does frankly a lousy job at hearing aircraft, seeing about 1/3 of a typical receiver in my area.

I got a new NESDR v5 from #Nooelec and when I plug it into my MacBook Air M1 I can hear way more airplanes with dump1090, even with nominally worse antenna location.

Now that I have enough parts, I'm going to compare the impact of CPU speed, antenna type, SDR type in reception.

    Is the Pi too slow?

  46. Next to antenna upgrades, I also migrated from #dump1090-mutability to #readsb / #tar1090. One advantage of this is the unsupported historical recording / playback feature of readsb. But this took a perf toll on my RPI3 which already performs other tasks and duties already. And RPI's were in short supply last year. Solution: Virtualise my ADSB decoder & use my RPI3 as a USB-over-IP bridge to the VM hosted ADSB decoder & feeders downstairs.
