I've been playing the Wii U virtual console version of Donkey Kong 64 and there's essentially a glitch in the port with the Krazy Kong Klamour! mini game. The mini game on fast mode was designed to rely on the N64 hardware's limits to make the timing manageable, but the Wii U has no such limits.

My workaround for this was to exploit restore states to make a restore state, let the game proceed so I know where the banana is, load the restore state and fire at where the banana is going to be before the lights go up, because it's still a deterministic piece of software.

Emulation problems require emulation solutions!

For today’s #vgmwednesday, I’m gonna look at a music trope that I quite like seeing in certain Nintendo and Rare games.

That being, the boss remix. Popularised by Grant Kirkhope, this has the level’s main theme remixed in a dramatic style for the boss fight. #DonkeyKong64 has a few really good examples there, like with Frantic Factory…

@coleens_ That's an #N64 Expansion Pak. It adds an extra 4 MiB of RAM, and is necessary to play #PerfectDark's single-player mode, and to play #DonkeyKong64 at all (but this is not, as widely believed, because of the memory leak; the Expansion Pak is necessary to load the graphics). It also allows a high-resolution mode in #CommandAndConquer.

The Expansion Pak, in regards to Donkey Kong 64, was not used to fix a game-breaking bug--this bug was in fact specific to one hardware revision of the Nintendo 64 and it was patched in time for release; the Expansion Pak was used mainly for the special colored vertex lighting that was used in the game that was often not in other similar N64 games where the lighting was often quite flat.

Not to mention the actual memory mapping in fact uses plenty of the space of it.

The "What Happened" video on Donkey Kong 64 expounds quite well on the subject.

I miss the comprehensiveness of old Player's Guides where they were often writing the guides in tandem with the developers actually making the game, usually with late localization prototypes so they'd have basically all the info about the game.

These pages have so much personality and practically work as extended player's manuals in and of themselves.

Here's a picture of the Donkey Kong 64 player's guide I've had since childhood that I took pretty decent care of. The amount of detail, care and attention that went into writing this guide is insanely great.
