I think it's because of jazz artists' inherent humility. And the pot.

Everybody's talking about Kendrick's "A Minor" counter in "Not Like Us" – and rightfully so! But in my eyes, he had already won here:

you make music that pacify 'em" 🎶The way he only mentions this in passing makes it even more of a flex. Kendrick's playing in his own league here, that's for sure!

LL Cool J - “To da Break of Dawn” single
Diss tracks have been around forever. And I mean forever (see “Yankee Doodle”, 1754). I think the first one I was aware of was Ice-T’s “The Syndicate” track.
This one here was a diss to LL's rivals at the time, Kool Moe Dee, MC Hammer, and Ice-T. The single is just this song with several different mixes. Lots of great sampling of 70s funk as usual.
