  1. Morozov brilliantly exposes how capitalism forecloses technological possibilities. But perhaps the most foreclosed possibility of all is that advanced AI itself — even one we might be able to tinker with to adapt to our own ends — might be incompatible with a livable planet. #DigitalDegrowth?

  2. "The only solution to the environmental crisis is to abolish class and inequality in every society. With respect to digital tech, this means eradicating digital colonialism and capitalism through a revolution based on digital degrowth."

    — Michael Kwet: Digital Degrowth, p. 150

  3. The book is starting really strong, with an analysis and explanation of digital colonialism and critical economic theory. A lot of empirical evidence is provided but it does not disrupt the reading flow. Rather it makes me want to continue. Can definitely recommend so far! #FediBooks #DigitalColonialism #DigitalDegrowth #Degrowth #Colonialism #MichaelKwet

  5. #Degrowth #DigitalDegrowth #Ecology #DigitalColonialism #DigitalCapitalism #SiliconValley: "The world is racing toward an irreversible ecological catastrophe. Environmental science makes clear that humans must reduce total material resource use, requiring a radical redistribution of wealth within and between countries. Yet little attention has been paid to how the digital economy fits into this equation.

Michael Kwet, a leading expert on digital colonialism, presents a new paradigm for the digital society. Merging the science of degrowth with a global analysis of the high-tech economy, he argues that digital capitalism and colonialism must be abolished quickly. In Digital Degrowth, Kwet maps out a path to a people's tech future. He calls for direct action against Silicon Valley, US imperialism and power elites everywhere in order to realize a radically egalitarian digital society that fosters equality in harmony with nature."

  6. @neil_selwyn I am looking at the concept of #digitalsufficiency in contrast to #digitaldegrowth : link.springer.com/article/10.1

There are a lot of overlaps of those concepts - What are your reasons for preferring digital degrowth as a term? Degrowth could lead to more rejection than sufficiency, in my opinion.

Thanks for the great #digitaldegrowth-article, @neil_selwyn

  10. " Recently, Sebastian Benthall, responding to a question I posed on Twitter of “When *shouldn’t* you build a machine learning system?” suggested “one should not build an ML [machine learning] system for making a class of decisions if there is already a better system for making that decision that does not use ML” [17].
