As #NetZeroBuildingsWeek draws to a close, I'm envisioning the #BuiltEnvironment of the future.

That means buildings, transportation systems, and other infrastructure working together to support healthy, thriving communities.

Life can and should get better as we #Decarb4Good.

Here are six ideas to upgrade our habitat while respecting the planet:

1) Operational emissions: These emissions occur because of what we’re doing to keep the building going–often using electricity and fossil gas to provide space cooling or heating, ventilation, lighting, hot water, etc.

Good news on operational emissions: The electric sector is working to #Decarb4Good, too! Electricity is getting cleaner around the world, and fast. (Fossil fuels are not.)

Do we need every single building to be certified as #NetZero to get to a decarbonized future? No!

The concept of Net Zero drives us to look at how a building is using energy *at the same time* we consider where that energy comes from. That's the value.

Here's the key: We get to Net Zero *as a planet* and #Decarb4Good when buildings and all other sectors work together.

Our homes, schools, shops, and offices now play an outsized role in adding to our greenhouse gas emissions. They will also play a starring role in “building” up the solutions we need to create a brighter future.

There are 3 BIG things we can do in buildings to #Decarb4Good:

1) Reduce our use of energy and materials.

2) Meet energy needs with clean energy sources.

3) Reduce demand for products like concrete and refrigerants that release lots of GHGs, and recover & reuse wherever possible.

It's #NetZeroBuildingsWeek and my employer is onboard, but stuck on corporate social media.

So I'll be sharing the content I wrote from here for the #EnergyMastodon and #BuiltEnvironment communities.
