Yesterday my wife and son and I saw a pair of bald eagles flying up a creek that winds through a marshy elk wallow. At golden hour right before the sun went behind the ridge. Miles from anything, in perfect silence. Breathtaking.

Since 2005, when we moved back to #Pennsylvania, we've seen #baldeagles in the wild more times than I can count. We explained to the boy, born in 2008, that before that year we had NEVER seen them outside of zoos.

We told him about Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, Nixon being shamed into establishing the #EPA, about #DDT eradicating malaria in North America but then almost eradicating raptors of all species. He gaped at us, speechless, but golly you could see the gears turning.

Auch der #BR Bayrische Rundfunk berichtete in den Nachrichten, als wäre die #US- Entscheidung zu #Glysophat, nicht zu den Zuständigkeiten der Behörden:

Weit von jeder #Sachkunde und #Wissenschaft in der #Krebsgefahr und in den schlampigen #Gebrauchanleitungen.

Aber wir produzieren ja auch immer noch #DDT für andere Länder, das dann in #Soja angereichert als #Viehfutter im #Fleisch auf unsere Teller kommt: #Kapitalismus tötet auch schon vor dem #Krieg.

Tributiltina: Usado frecuentemente como preservante de madera por sus propiedades antifúngicas y acaricidas, este obesógeno persiste durante años en entornos acuáticos.

DDT: Un pesticida prohibido en los años 70 que, debido a su larga vida media y degradación en otros compuestos derivados, sigue siendo un contaminante importante. Relacionado con obesidad, enfermedades cardiacas, diabetes tipo 2 y cáncer.

Hidrocarburos aromáticos policíclicos: Derivados de la combustión incompleta de compuestos orgánicos como tabaco, carbón, petróleo, gasolina y basura orgánica. Estos compuestos están vinculados a un aumento en el riesgo de enfermedades metabólicas, incluyendo la obesidad y la diabetes, y también tardan en desaparecer del ambiente.

Wenn wir jeden Monat einen Handgriff mehr nur noch als Kunde von US-Tech-Riesen durchfuehren koennen, koennen wir rasch die ersehnte Handlungsunfaehigkeit unserer Demokratien herbeifuehren. Das Verkehrsunternehmen Eures Vertrauens hilft sicher gerne mit, z.B. mit einem Loyalty-Programm, das nur #gafam Kunden nutzen duerfen. However, federal records from the Environmental Protection Agency [#EPA] show that from the 1930s to the early 1970s, government agencies allowed companies to dump various types of waste at 14 underwater sites off the coast of Southern California. For those four decades, manufacturers got rid of their #refinery waste, filter cakes and oil #drilling waste, chemical waste, garbage, #military explosives and #RadioactiveWaste at these dump sites."

"Scientists were not able to identify the specific alkaline waste substances contained within the barrels. However, they point out that several industrial processes were known to produce alkaline waste, including #DDT manufacturing and oil refining, so the barrels might be linked to those.

"They also can’t estimate the full extent of the potential alkaline waste contamination. Roughly a third of the barrels identified so far have halos, but they don’t know if that ratio applies to all the barrels on the seafloor. Scientists also don’t know the exact number of barrels, though a previous estimate suggests there are more than 25,000.

" 'We don’t know how big the problem really is,' Gutleben tells the San Diego Union-Tribune.

"One thing seems certain: Given that the barrels were dumped more than 50 years ago and that they’re still having a major impact on the surrounding environment, the chemicals are likely here to stay. They represent a new type of “persistent pollutant” that takes a long time to break down, the researchers write in the paper.
