  1. Today is Phil Mendelson's 72nd birthday and Vince Gray's 82nd. #DCCouncil

  2. Today is the 81st birthday of DC's former mayor, former council chair, and current Ward 7 councilmember Vince Gray. He's 12 days older than Joe Biden. It's also the 71st birthday of Phil Mendelson, chair of the #DCCouncil.

  3. Christina Henderson becomes the 4th member of the #DCCouncil to register with the Office of Campaign Finance to run for reelection (despite being an independent, with no June primary). Still no action from Vince Gray or Trayon White.

  4. DC shadow senator Mike Brown has a fundamental misunderstanding of what his job is. He supposed to support #DCStatehood, not denounce the #DCCouncil and the voters for being too liberal and soft on crime. It may be a meaningless office, but I hope someone decent runs against him next year. #DCPolitics #DCision24

  5. New bill from @brianneknadeau: "The legislation gives the Department of Public Works and other enforcement agencies authority to immediately tow and impound cars whose owners have blatantly flouted the law by having clearly counterfeit, obscured, or long-expired plates. Under current law, even a vehicle with no license plates cannot be towed unless it has two or more unpaid tickets."

  11. Ward 2 councilmember Brooke Pinto is publicly arguing that because the mayor and police department refuse to enforce laws they don't like, the council should avoid passing such laws. #DCPolitics #DCCouncil

  12. We have a second #DCCouncil member on Mastodon: @brianneknadeau. She joins her colleague @JLGDC, who unfortunately hasn't posted since November. It would be good to have more discussion of #DCPolitics here, though at least we don't have the crime trolls.

  13. Who is running DC councilmember Anita Bonds's Twitter account, and why are they retweeting a fringe Republican presidential candidate discounting systemic racism and climate change? #DCCouncil #DCPolitics

  14. Is Mendelson saying the investigation can't be biased unless Falcicchio was exonerated? It seems like finding that no one in the administration was to blame except the guy who's been fired was the best feasible outcome for the mayor. #DCGovernment #DCPolitics #DCCouncil

  15. Meanwhile on Twitter the DC GOP has taken its account private after being criticized for attempting to dunk on Councilmembers Allen, Nadeau, and Frumin in a reply to a photo of them at the opening of the Capital Jewish Museum. Not the best place for Republicans to say "This city is in big trouble." #DCPolitics #DCCouncil

  16. At yesterday's dangerous driving roundtable, Deputy Mayor Lucinda Babers was unhappy that people can look up how many traffic tickets a car has. Apparently we need less transparency. #DCCouncil #DCPolitics #VisionZeroDC (HT @LhasaCM)

  17. Chuck Thies, communications director for #Ward7DC Councilmember Vince Gray, says he'll lay off the Twitter attacks on other members, but he has no regrets.

Apparently the media still can't speak directly to Gray though: "But it’s hard to know what Gray really thinks about all this. The councilmember has said he’ll communicate with the press only via written statements as he recovers, and Thies is the one in charge of writing those statements."

  27. @IMGoph Ed Begley Jr still needs to play Jack Evans in the #DCCouncil movie.

  28. Good work from @JLGDC responding to Jake Tapper and pointing out that the discussion of the criminal code reform bill in the media is based on Republican misrepresentations. Too bad Tapper threw in that bit about prosecutors at the end without mentioning that the prosecutors are federal and the DC government and voters have no control over them. #DCCouncil #DCStatehood #DCPolitics

  29. This is depressing. The first time in decades that Congress has directly blocked a law passed by our local government in DC. It would probably be happening regardless, but maybe not in such a high-profile way if our mayor hadn't given him cover and endorsed the Republican propaganda about the bill. #DCStatehood #DCPolitics #DCCouncil

  30. In 1992, when Congress forced DC to hold a referendum on bringing back the death penalty, #DCCouncil Chair John Wilson told people to vote against it, even though he supported the death penalty. He opposed congressional interference in DC's local laws. All DC elected officials ought to be willing to stand up for #DCStatehood and to say #HandsOffDC.

  31. You had one job, Shadow Senator Brown. Maybe you're following the mayor's lead, but you were elected specifically to advocate for #DCStatehood and against this sort of intervention, not to insult the #DCCouncil in the media and give support to congressional enemies of self-government.

  32. "The Pundits Are Wrong About DC’s Crime Bill—A cynical freakout stretching from Fox News to the Washington Post is utterly bogus."
"The DC bill is not a liberal wishlist of soft-on-crime policies. It is an exhaustive and entirely mainstream blueprint for a more coherent and consistent legal system." #DCCouncil

  33. #DCCouncil votes 12-1 to override the mayor's veto of the criminal code rewrite bill (which had passed unanimously). Trayon White was the only member to change his vote. dcist.com/story/23/01/17/dc-co

  34. Any #DCCouncil members or other DC local elected officials above the level of ANC on Mastodon yet? Any #DCgovt agencies?
