I take these songs slowly, they are so highly condensed.
I had listened to Song I a while ago and had thought I would let some time pass before listening to the others. Thank you for your gentle invitation to Songs V and VI; I am glad to follow it.
Song V today, Song VI will have to wait a little. One at a time.
All these pieces effect some substantial but hard-to-pin-down change within myself. True art.

Three minutes of emotional and aesthetic intensity. I will let the after-effects do their work, then I will listen to Song I again. After a while I will listen to Song II. I will give these songs time.
Your follow-up thread is very moving too: the collaboration with your wife and father-in-law, the respect for the meaning and sound of the original poetry.
I don't speak any Chinese, but to my ears the affinity between music and text is so complete it hits me. I am moved by a text that speaks to me even if I have never understood its literal meaning.
As a young man I once attended a summer festival dedicated to Anton Webern (Berliner Festwochen 1983). Three weeks of emotional and aesthetic purity. I remember the elation coming from this encounter. I experience the same elation now.
