Over 300,000 migrants crossed the Darien Gap into Panama in 2024, 42% fewer than the record number who made the perilous jungle crossing from South America a year earlier.

Absent from nearly ALL of the discussion of #immigration are the voices of the people migrating. So: It Could Happen Here's James Stout journeyed to the Darién Gap:
> As the United States winds down its war and terror, it needs a new nebulous enemy to justify its military spending and to keep the security and surveillance companies donations to politicians in the millions.
> In part, it has found that by simply opening a floodgate of weapons and funding, they can spew forth genocide and death in Palestine and keep some of its income streams. But it needs a more long-term solution. There are only so many Palestinian babies that they can bomb, and we'll run out of Palestinians long before we run out of bombs. The USA needs a new enemy.
> It's a migrant.
> It's a woman I met carrying her child across the mountains. The little Venezuelan girl throwing bottle caps into a cinder block with me to pass the time as she asked me questions about America. It's a 21-year-old man whose remains my friends found in the border on a hot day this September.

October 16 WOLA Border Update Video
https://vimeo.com/1020358627?share=copy
This one is about September’s jump in Darién Gap migration. I wore a suit because I had to give a lecture shortly afterward at the Inter-American Defense College.
We’ve done one of these two-minute videos about the border and migration every Wednesday since August 7. The plan is to do two more and end the “season,” evaluating what has and hasn’t […]

Stellar & heartbreaking #journalism from Guillermo Galdos on #Channel4News that all #USelections voters should watch: why parents leave #Venezuela, facing death in crossing the #DarienGap on the one hand and leaving their children to die from #hunger on the other.
The real question is why/whose fault and the answer is simple: the lethal #oil industry harboring #corruption & killing #climate & lives.

Each year, about half a million South Americans migrate to the United States by foot. Along the way, they must traverse the Darién Gap, a deadly 100-mile-long stretch of undeveloped jungle separating Colombia from Panama. Two YouTubers made the trek to discover for themselves, and their audiences, just what such an arduous trek entailed. “No one knew we were journalists,” Timmy Karter said. “If they did, we would be dead.” Read more from Big Think: https://flip.it/3pIzeL

After increasing at the beginning of 2024, #migration through the #DariénGap has declined somewhat, settling at about 1,000 people per day.
69% in May were Venezuelan.
Colombia for the first time was in 2nd place.
Haiti and China are dropping. India and Peru are up.
-
As of May 8, the number of migrants per day passing through the #DariénGap is modestly declining. The number passing through #Honduras is increasing—perhaps indicating more use of the Nicaragua aerial route. #migration

At some point last month, the 500,000th Venezuelan migrant of the 2020s crossed the #DarienGap
61% of all #migration through the treacherous region in this decade has been a citizen of #Venezuela.
36,001 people migrated through the Darién in January. That’s up from December, but still the 4th-smallest of the last twelve months' totals.
