Peony season has begun! Here is Cytherea (1980 Gold Medal, American Peony Society).
'Cytherea' is a synonym for Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. And according to scholars "Cytherea is an adjectival form from the island of Cythera, which lies between Crete and the Peloponnese." Jean-Antoine Watteau's painting, Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera (1717), captures the flirtatiousness and frivolity of love. Aphrodite is depicted in the painting.
