SolarWinds CISO says the intrusion probably came in via Microsoft O365. Lack of logs on E3 license would make it hard to notice even if you went looking. Auth mechanisms then were less mature than now. I would be considerably harsher on the trillionaire-dollar global company that it's trying to force everyone to online subscriptions and AI and insane stuff like Recall. #CyberCon

The talk from Annabelle Harrison about cyber safety for abuse victims was really refreshing as what's the best practises for that environment might not seems correct. E.g. writing down passwords could be the best way of securing a passwords while allowing unique passwords for each service. #cybercon

The people here at #cybercon (when they're not trying to sell you something) have been really nice. Lots of cyber veterans with interesting stories and the presence and support for females has been really noticeable. I was even congratulated for being a girl in cyber which was really affirming.

And the big vendors seem to be all about making things more convoluted. Like there is a company here selling what is effectively a web frontend to Microsoft's security products to make them more manageable. #cybercon

The cyber industry feels really bloated right now. Everyone and their dog has an XDR solution with all the bells and whistles which will solve all your cyber security problems (and you do have cyber security problems). I wonder how long the bubble will last?

The MC, who I believe is on the board of AISA, apparently uses ChatGPT a lot and puts in all sorts of personal and sensitive info and is pretty blasé about it, even though she knows it's probably a bad idea. Remember all that stuff about cultural change? ffs #CyberCon

Second speaker provides an example of using free tools to investigate a CEO target, and you can find out a lot, including mobile phone location data, and all I see is systemic failure by regulators to make privacy a priority and nuke data brokers from orbit. #CyberCon

So much use of the words "safe" and "secure". Safe from what? Secured by who? Badly built, insecure products? Corporations that collect too much personal data and sell it to data brokers? #CyberCon

There's community comms things happening, which sounds fine and useful. It's very "personal responsibility" focused though. Not so much about "what can the people who build these insecure products do instead with all their power and money?" #CyberCon

Opening keynote for #CyberCon is the Australian National Cyber Coordinatior, Michelle McGuinness. You know, the military person who does PR for the government whenever we have another massive data breach.

As you probably know by now, Sean Martin, CISSP and I are not going to be in Melbourne for #CyberCon with the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) this year... which really sucks as we had a great time there in 2024 - We met amazing people, created great content, and truly miss sharing quality time with the #cybersecurity community Down Under!
But this isn't stopping us from being virtually there by reconnecting with friends and meeting new ones while covering the event remotely.
So here's my conversation with the one and only Jacqueline Jayne (JJ) talking about her upcoming session: "Beyond Blame: Keeping Our Kids Safe Online" at CyberCon Melbourne (October 15-17, 2025).
There's something fundamentally broken in how we approach online safety for young people. We're quick to point fingers—at tech companies, at schools, at kids themselves—but JJ wants to change that conversation entirely.
