  1. Look! It's alive! I found my old Nook Color, running Android 4.0.4 and CyanogenMod 9.0.0.

Can it be updated (easily!) to something less dated? CyanogenMod seems to go all the way to 14 before it disappears.

Awww, well look at that. This ancient post about using Cyanogenmod on the Galaxy S2 has been reported for copyright infringement to Google. Along with dozens of porn sites. I didn’t know Cyanogenmod was just a hot topic! Anyway, I’m not going to do anything about it, but I just wanted to mark the occasion.

So glad I never got into this stupid hobby.

I was into modding my tablet and phone with CyanogenMod 10 years ago as a mere 14 year old, lol. CWM was losing popularity and TWRP was becoming popular. Magisk was not yet a thing back then

It was all fun until the CMod team chose the other path on that "fork in the road." I wonder where the cyanogen people are now...

  9. I have been using LineageOS (and previously CyanogenMod) and F-Droid with additional repositories for years, and today I cannot imagine using Android packed with google services and weighed down by the manufacturer's GUI.

  10. @distrowatch

OK. Thanks. This may improve once more developers and resources are available. It is a tough topic. Back in 2015, I used on a Samsung phone. The quality of the photos was bad, and the camera often either didn't start or crashed (draining the battery in the background). No comparison to current custom ROMs.

  11. @samsung I've turned to your #SamsungCommunity only to discover your rules are so prohibative no one posts to it.

My post *is* related to "Samsung devices, One UI, or the Samsung ecosystem" but most certainly is an individual support question. I paid way more than I could reasonably afford to purchase your #Samsung #Galaxy #A53 5G #SM-A536W

The latest unwanted "upgrade" deprives me of the ability to take MY OWN PHOTOS or FILES files off of MY PHONE. This is no *upgrade*. This is #ransomeware

    WTF have you done???

I didn't buy this thing for the phone, I bought it because the specs made the A53 5G SM-A536W seem to have a camera approximating the capabilities of my Huawei P30 Pro. It didn't, but, it was all I could afford at the time.

It is annoying to be forced to try to remove or at least turn off a bunch of junk like Bixby Vision that I don't want but Samsung baked into my phone. I miss the ability to root my phone with #Cyanogenmod. But now Samsung is denying me the ability to access my own IP

I'm getting a bit nostalgic I think this was 4.4 KitKat or? I flashed this Android version with #cyanogenmod on my ZTE Blade 3 back in like 2011 or so.. I still have the phone, still works running 4.4 KitKat but not really usable any more.

  18. Current installing #GrapheneOS on my new Pixel 8! I'm excited to be taking the plunge. The last time I ran a custom OS, it was called #CyanogenMod. I really enjoyed the Pixel platform, but Google has become too evil for me. Doing my part to stop feeding the data demons. #privacy

  19. @laxla
    "Android" -- find the fault.
    Ever heard of #CustomROM?
I know them since #CyanogenMod. Then #LineageOS and the derivatives #/e/OS and (my favorite) #iodé.

Hoy, por fin, he logrado liberar a mis dispositivos y me he liberado a mí misma.

  21. I am now proud to announce that I have successfully built #CyanogenMod (the well-known #AOSP fork) on Debian 12. It took a small amount of patching to get working but it wasn't actually that bad.

Next up: Forking CM11, changing the branding (to #KittyKat), and making some changes.

  25. Have found an old #Android tablet which I'm trying to resurrect.

    How old?

    Samsung n8010 running #CyanogenMod 13 😱

Has sprung back to life and is charging *incredibly* slowly.

Managed to get a modern TWRP recovery on there, so hopefully can bring it up to an unofficial #Lineage.

Not quite retrocomputing, but certainly a blast from the bast 🙂

  27. @mnl in that case I rate #LineageOS, used to use it back when it was #CyanogenMOD. Device coverage is excellent but the only trick with it is finding a stable build for your phone model, many of them only have nightlies and often stale ones at that. But the good news is their nightly builds are really quite stable.

  28. Going to take a trek down memory lane with some of the prototype devices I got to keep.

  30. Decided to try on my old OnePlus5T

The phone no longer gets updates from and I don't use it much so thought it would be a good device to try it on being my first custom rom since the old days.

Installation was a little tricky on / but if you follow the instructions carefully it worked first time. (Docs could be improved a little)

    Phone feels fresh and snappier.

    Very impressed.

Not sure I'm brave enough just yet to try it on my daily driver !

  31. Back in 2019 when I got my #oneplus7pro it was the first time in 7-8 years that my first job when opening a fresh phone wasn't to unlock, wipe and flash #CyanogenMod/#LineageOS. And I've used it's stock #android since. And it was awesome for the first couple of years. I didn't believe I would ever like a stock ROM again, #OxygenOS back then was pretty great though.

    But the
#oppo "merger" pretty much started a serious enshitification process.

After dragging my feet for a while I've gotten around to setting up a "backup" phone we had around the house for my payments app (which at least for a while more will be inevitable) and am hoping to get around to flashing
#Lineage at some point over the weekend.

It was nice while it lasted, but I guess we're pretty much back in the situation of no adequate stock ROMs. A few years back when I was last using
#LOS I needed the whole google bloatware for work reasons, but now I think I can pull off a fully degoogled phone, so hoping that works out.

I'm pretty interested in trying out
#postmarketos too, but that seems to have somewhat partial support for #guacamole and I don't feel adventurous enough for that at this time.

  32. Anyways, I apologize for the nostalgic/jaded perspective here - and it could be a dissimilar enough space that it won't matter.
