With Winter Storm #Cora bearing down on #Texas this week, I wanted to remind everyone of what happened in Texas in February of 2021. It was criminal. Settle in, and I will tell you why.
A rare and significant weather event hit Texas over a wide area with up to five inches of ice-covered snow, and the temperature stayed below freezing for nearly two days. Almost 5 million lost power and heat for much longer. Officially 246 people died. Up to 700 deaths could easily be attributed to the lack of electricity, heat, and water.
These deaths were not evenly distributed. ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) saw that the entire grid was about to fail, due to record demand and because of their infrastructure, mostly natural gas lines, were not winterized, even though analysts had pointed out that this could lead to a disaster. To avoid a complete failure of their grid, which was not connected to the two major grids in the country, they instituted a partial shutdown, with rolling blackouts in some areas. My best friend and her husband had two minutes of power, just long enough to microwave two frozen burritos. He is diabetic, so his food choices (like peanut butter sandwiches) were not ideal, but it was impossible to buy food. They would occasionally get in the car and run the heater to get warm, and then go back into the house, and get under all the blankets they had.
Notably, the wealthiest neighborhoods, especially near Dallas/Fort Worth were the "lucky ones" who were not affected by the partial grid shutdown. Imagine that.
It wasn't just the lack of power for heat in freezing temperatures that was so dangerous. Lack of winter insulation in many Texas homes and businesses caused frozen water pipes in the walls to burst everywhere. That cut off water to far too many people.
Texas has always had an attitude of independence, like they are their own country. They not only have the saying "Don't Mess With Texas" but also refer to their state as "The Republic of Texas." But look how they handled the disaster! Governor Greg Abbott tried at first to blame the crisis on alternative energy sources, but it was obvious that it was their own efforts to keep their grid away from federal control that was the problem. They couldn't get electricity easily from other states. Not only that, but ERCOT allowed surge pricing, which is of course, price gouging, and it was extreme.
According to Wikipedia:
"During the crisis, some energy firms made billions in profits, while others went bankrupt, due to some firms being able to pass extremely high wholesale prices ($9,000/MWh, typically $50/MWh) on to consumers, while others could not, with this price being allegedly held at the $9,000 cap by ERCOT for two days longer than necessary, creating $16 billion in unnecessary charges."
I remember that a retired veteran was charged $16,000 for his power bill, which was his entire life savings. All to keep himself alive during a crisis.
There have been changes since, but we shall see. Texas is a microcosm of what happens when greed meets bad leadership. It is not a great sign for how disasters will affect the whole country, with these Yahoos in charge of everything.

I think #Cora solves this problem to a large extent by having a single queue. So at most just one customer takes a big time hit while the full time hit is distributed into small amounts to everyone else.
