Sam on board of the King's new boat, which travels fast in strong wind. Flat golden sunlight envelopes everything, Sam looks invigorated by the light and the wind and the energy of the hectic but assured work of crew. He eats the fresh oysters, his face glowing in joy.
He turned thirty just a few days ago; he begins to be recognised by the world; life is good.

It's school holidays, but I need to go to the office to meet some students. My daughters want to come with me. Playing games on the train. When I meet my students, they stay in the room, quietly drawing their pictures. On the way back they walk arm in arm, laughing. We sit on a bench in the University gardens and eat the potato salad I made for them last night. Later we have an ice cream by the water.
