Over the last week or so, tracks from Willie Nelson’s upcoming album Last Leaf on the Tree have kept popping up in my timeline, so we’re going to visit with ol’ Willie today. Last Leaf… will be the 91-year-old’s 153rd album, coming out (on November 1) no less than 50 flippin’ years after the one we’re spotlighting here today, Phases and Stages (number 493 on The List, submitted by p25eddie).
I know there’s a lot of numbers in the above paragraph, but did you catch that? 153rd album?!!! P and S, meanwhile, is *only* Nelson’s 17th studio album. Some artists would never even dream of having their discography number in the double digits, let alone triple digits. Amazing.
Anyway, P and S is a concept album – apparently one of the first country concept albums at that – so after a long hiatus, we return to our “Thursday, What A Concept” series.
The concept: A fictional account of a fictional couple’s divorce. Side 1 is told from the woman’s point of view, side 2 from the man’s. The title track reoccurs throughout the album as a theme song, a really nice touch that I love to see in albums.
The outcome: Atlantic Records were unhappy and released Nelson from his contract after this album came out. Either they simply wanted to lose money or they didn’t like the fact that the woman on P and S comes out the other side of the divorce happier, the cheating husband remaining the sad bastard that he was. Given the numbers we’ve already run through above, the fact that this album is an absolute gem, and the fact that Nelson’s next contract (with Columbia Records) gave him complete creative control, I think it all worked out for both Nelson and us in the end.
