Spesso si pensa ai record aeronautici come a una gara tra giovani piloti militari, ma la storia dell'18 maggio 1953 racconta tutt'altro.Sopra il lago asciutto di Rogers, in California, Jacqueline "Jackie" #Cochran è entrata nella storia diventando la prima donna a superare la barriera del suono.
Cochran non era una "giovane promessa". Aveva 47 anni, un impero cosmetico tutto suo e una carriera già leggendaria. In un'epoca in cui i jet militari erano territorio quasi esclusivo di uomini in uniforme, lei ha forzato la porta.
Volava su un Canadair F-86 Sabre (versione su licenza del North American F-86), un caccia nato dalla Guerra di Corea, fornito dalla Royal Canadian Air Force.
Ha stabilito un primato di velocità su circuito chiuso di 100 km, con una media di circa 1.050 km/h, superando Mach 1.
A darle il supporto tecnico e ad accompagnarla come pilota di osservazione era Chuck Yeager, l'uomo che per primo aveva rotto il muro del suono nel 1947.Cochran dimostrò che i limiti della fisica potevano essere superati da chi avesse la competenza, indipendentemente dal genere, e, sul piano culturale mostrò che una donna poteva essere protagonista assoluta della modernità aeronautica, non una semplice eccezione tollerata.
Cochran nel 1964, a 58 anni, volò ancora più in alto su un F-104 Starfighter raggiungendo Mach 2. Alla sua morte nel 1980, deteneva più record di velocità e quota di chiunque altro al mondo.Un caso di emancipazione conquistata con casco, ossigeno, strumenti e rischio.
