S2:E8 of Severance confirmed my thoughts regarding the ether, which I only recently learned was akin to meth at one point in time in many places.
Hopefully the grounded nature of this episode ends the, to me, ridiculous theories on reincarnation of any kind being a motivation. Kier died long before any such tech solution was considered.
It seems worker/general mind control and avoidance of pain and suffering are Lumon's goals.
