What happened to these instances was they were sold by the founder to the owner of a badly behaved, widely defederated instance around 2020. They degraded from there and seem to have been completely abandoned in 2023.
We continue to ponder defederating completely but that would cut connections. So I'd like to encourage anyone who has follows/followers with mastodon.cloud or mstdn.jp to identify if they're important, and maybe invite them to a new home. a #cloudSave operation, if ye will.
