https://www.sueddeutsche.de/meinung/klimakonferenz-paris-vertrag-zehn-jahre-li.3334497Rough translation of my favourite part:
"Instead, now the beautiful formulation of an 'overshoot' is going around: yes, we will surpass 1.5°C, but only briefly, then we'll take back CO2 from the atmosphere and bring the temperatures back down, so everything is under control. That is just wishful thinking - at least as long as the world does not manage to even stabilise emissions. Let alone reduce them. Let alone bring them down to net-zero. Let alone bring them down to the negative zone."

“I Don’t Believe in Global Warming” by Banksy
Banksy's iconic 'I Don’t Believe in Global Warming' artwork in Camden, London, delivers a bold climate message as its red graffiti text submerges under water, symbolizing rising sea levels and the urgent need for action.https://streetartutopia.com/2025/01/01/banksy-climate-change/

Head of U.N. #ClimateSummit in #Azerbajian Caught on Tape Pushing Oil & Gas Deals
-
Street art has long been a powerful medium for social and political commentary, and few artists have harnessed its potential quite like Banksy.
Known for his provocative pieces, Banksy challenge societal norms and highlight pressing global issues. One such piece, titled “I Don’t Believe in Global Warming,” remains particularly poignant in today’s climate-sensitive world.
“I Don’t Believe in Global Warming” first appeared on Regent’s Canal in London in 2009.
This visual metaphor is both striking and powerful, suggesting that denying climate change does nothing to halt its effects, which are visibly rising around us.
The timing of this piece was no coincidence. It emerged shortly after the Copenhagen UN Climate Summit, a meeting that many deemed unsuccessful in producing concrete solutions to global warming. By placing his message in such a context, Banksy underscored the world’s inadequate response to climate change.
More by Banksy: 24 artworks by Banksy: Who Is The Visionary of Street Art
Fast forward to 2024, and Banksy’s message is as relevant as ever.
The artwork has become a symbol frequently referenced during climate action events and discussions. During London Climate Action Week 2023, the piece was prominently highlighted to emphasize the ongoing struggle against climate change denial and the urgent need for collective action.
In 2024, the impacts of climate change are more visible and frequent. From severe weather events to rising sea levels, the urgency to act against global warming has never been more pronounced.
Banksy’s artwork embodies the sentiment of disbelief and denial that unfortunately still circulates in some parts of society. Yet, it also inspires hope, pushing the narrative that awareness and action can and must rise above the tide of denial.

“I Don’t Believe in Global Warming” first appeared on Regent’s Canal in London in 2009.
The artwork features the stark message “I DON’T BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING” painted in bold red letters, partially submerged in water.
#Cop28 summary from the South China Morning Post #SCMP #HongKong - "Cop28’s watered down draft text criticised for omitting #FossilFuel ‘#PhaseOut
- Critics panned the watered down draft text that suggests ‘reducing’ use of #FossilFuels, and scraps previous call to ‘phase out’ #coal, #oil, and #gas.
Deals at #UN #ClimateSummit must be passed by consensus among the nearly 200 countries present.
A draft of a potential #climate deal at the #Cop28 #summit on Monday suggested a range of options countries could take to reduce greenhouse gas #GHG #emissions, but omitted the “phase out” of fossil fuels many nations have demanded.
#UN Secretary General Antonio #Guterres said a central benchmark of success for Cop28 would be whether it yielded a deal to phase out #coal, #oil and #gas use fast enough to avert disastrous #ClimateChange.
“That doesn’t mean that all countries must phase out fossil fuels at the same time,” he told reporters at the #Dubai summit, which is scheduled to end on Tuesday but could go on longer if negotiations drag on.
A new draft of a Cop28 agreement, published by the United Arab Emirates’ #UAE presidency of the summit, proposed various options but did not refer to a “phase out” of all fossil fuels, which had been included in a previous draft.
The draft deal listed eight options that countries “could” use to cut emissions, including by: “reducing both consumption and production of fossil fuels, in a just, orderly and equitable manner so as to achieve net zero by, before, or around 2050”.
Other actions listed included tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, “rapidly phasing down unabated coal” and scaling up technologies including those to capture #CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere.
One #European diplomat told #Reuters the new text was weak on ambition and read like a “menu where you can pick and choose your dish at will”.
A coalition of more than 100 countries including oil and gas producers the #UnitedStates, #Canada and #Norway, as well as the European Union #EU and climate-vulnerable island nations, wanted an agreement that included language to phase out fossil fuels, a feat not achieved in 30 years of the UN summits."

So ... #Cop28 #Dubai #Cop #UN cop-out? It looks that way. Here is a quick summary of comments from people in the know ... (largely from the #Guardian live-feed)
- Simon Evans of Carbon Brief, who notes that hardly any of the verbs in the latest draft global stocktake text at Cop28 actually ask for action.- the #EU - “"We think there are elements in the text that are fully unacceptable,” says Ribera. “We want to have 1.5C being the safe space. We are going to fight for 1.5C. The current text provides some reference to the science, some reference to 1.5C, but it is not consistent with dealing with #energy. We need to get into deeper discussions with many other partners, and of course with the president. I cannot hide the fact from you that as it stands, the text is disappointing", said Hoekstra."
- ‘Epic mess’ – Bill Hare of Climate Analytics - The climate scientist and chief executive of Climate Analytics, Dr Bill Hare, has been to 27 Cops in person and attended the 28th - Cop26 in Glasgow - virtually due to Covid19.
He told the Guardian the text was an “epic mess” and there was “no way if it was operationalised that it would keep 1.5C in reach. I would say it’s giving every #FossilFuel exporter on the planet everything they need to expand #Fossilfuels production. They might not say it, they might have crocodile tears, but I think any country involved in exporting #coal, #oil or #gas would be privately very happy.”
- “It’s full of weaker proposals than we’d hoped, and internal contradictions,” said Tom Evans, at thinktank #E3G. “On the one hand, it talks of the need to limit temperature rise to 1.5C, to peak #emissions in 2025, to cut emissions 43% by [2030] and 60% by 2055. But all of those require concrete actions. What’s in this text doesn’t add up: you have a long menu of options on the energy section, [but] not including the clear, unambiguous #PhaseOut fossil fuels.”
- David Waskow, at the World Resources Institute, said: “This text doesn’t send the clear signals that are needed to avert the climate crisis. The suggested set of actions is merely a pick-your-own menu.”
- "Meena Raman, #Cop veteran and climate policy expert from the Third World Network, says that she’s relieved that it’s not totally biased towards the wealthy nations, and that there’s likely to be a diversity of reactions from the developing and developed world."
- "A more nuanced take by Bob Ward, the policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science - "This has the makings of an historic text, which recognises for the first time in the outcome of a United Nations climate change summit that the production and consumption of fossil fuels need to be cut and replaced by cleaner alternatives in order to achieve net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by mid-century. However, the text is too weak at the moment because it only suggests parties could, rather than should, reduce fossil fuels consumption and production. This should not be optional""
- ‘We need [phase out] in the text’, says Colombia minister
- Susana Muhamad, Colombia’s environment minister, said - “We need [phase out] in the text. We need to acknowledge that we need 43% reduction by 2030, which is not here. We need 1.5C. 2050 is too late. If we don’t get 2030, we don’t have 2050 and we don’t have 1.5C."
- Cedric Schuster, the chair of #AOSIS (Alliance of Small Island States) and a cabinet minister of #Samoa, said in a statement - “We are concerned that the process at this time is not in the spirit of multilateralism. As #SIDS [small island developing states], we feel our voices are not being heard, while it appears that several other parties have enjoyed preferential treatment, compromising the transparency and inclusivity of the process.
We are greatly concerned that this lack of a platform to air our views has resulted in weak language that will obliterate our chances of maintaining the 1.5C warming limit …
Finance and mitigation must go hand in hand. Developed countries must lead because they have the resources to do so, we call on major economies to take the lead here in finance flows.
We will not sign our death certificate. We cannot sign on to text that does not have strong commitments on phasing out #FossilFuels."

From the #Guardian (Fiona Harvey) live feed, 14.22 CET 11. December 2023 - what do you think this means, actually? " #FossilFuel production and consumption will be reduced by 2050 in line with scientific advice, according to a new draft agreement at the #Cop28 #UN #ClimateSummit in #Dubai.
The long-awaited draft from the presidency avoids the terms #PhaseOut or #PhaseDown, which have been key sources of contention at this conference.
However, by requiring countries to reduce their #FossilFuel production, it effectively achieves the same ends as a phase-down, without using the contentious language that some countries would not allow.
Some countries and campaigners are likely to be disappointed, but the Guardian understands that the presidency held firm against severe pressure from some countries to weaken the outcome.
Governments will now be invited to consider the text, with two key meetings to take place this evening, in particular a heads of delegation meeting at 8pm.
One source close to developing countries at the talks said this was a compromise that could work. Despite the lack of phase-out or phase-down language, the text addresses fossil fuel production directly, rather than fossil fuel emissions – seen as a get-out clause for countries that want to use carbon capture and storage."

Just to give you an idea about how long it takes before this kind of news propagates in the MSM, if at all, I first saw something about this a week or so ago.
DUBAI (Reuters) – A member of the main advisory board of the COP28 #climatesummit resigned on Friday over reports that the UAE presidency used the meeting to secure new oil, gas deals, according to her resignation letter..." #CopOut28 #Cop28 #ClimateCrisis #CO2
