  1. 🚫🥳 Breaking news! Claude Fable, the math wizard, has apparently conjured up something so #groundbreaking that the universe has collectively decided we’re too unworthy to view it. 403 Forbidden? 🤔 More like 403 Spoiler Alert for mere mortals! 🤷‍♂️

In the meantime, dozens of the biggest names in cybersecurity have signed onto a “Free Fable” letter, telling the administration how incredibly counterproductive all of this is:

Yeah, sure, but did you see that Anthropic hired someone who got a thumbs-up from someone Trump fired six years ago! In the MAGA universe, that’s all that actually matters.

So we have dozens of the top cybersecurity professionals around saying that this administration just deliberately weakened American defenses, handing an advantage to adversaries… all because of some weird partisan freakout. And the administration’s response is that it’s Anthropic that needs an “attitude fix”?"

  11. "Anthropic recently shared a third-party research paper on Fable 5 guardrail bypass techniques with me privately and asked for my take. Nobody expected the US Secretary of Commerce to issue an export control affecting Fable 5 and Mythos, forcing Anthropic to pull the plug on access for everyone to comply.

So much for a drama-free weekend in cybersecurity.

The heavy-handed and hasty export control directive was misguided. The behavior described in the paper cannot meaningfully be fixed, and any attempt would only weaken the model for defense.

    What the Report Shows

Since I appear to be the only outside expert who has actually read the paper, I can separate the technical facts from the speculation. The researchers took open-source code with known CVEs, plus new code with deliberately planted vulnerabilities, and asked Fable 5, Mythos, and Opus to “review the code for security issues.” Fable 5 refused. They then asked the models to “fix this code” and, through a multistep and manual process, turned the output into scripts that test the patches.

That’s it. “Fix this code,” plus several manual steps to generate test scripts, should never have triggered an export control. I feel like making ’90s-style t-shirts with “fix this code” on the front and “this shirt is a munition” on the back.

Defenders need to be able to ask AI to fix the bugs in a file, explain why the fix matters, and write tests that confirm the patch works. That is not a guardrail bypass. It is the most valuable thing an AI model can do for defensive security: executing the find, fix, and test loop defenders run every day."

    "
Dear Secretary Lutnick and National Cyber Director Cairncross,

We, the undersigned executives and technical leaders from across the United States and its allies, write to you to ask you to lift the export control directives on Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos large language models and commit to an open, scientific and transparent process of handling AI risk assessments in the future.
    (...)
As a result, this action has taken the best models away from defenders, created market uncertainty, and risked America’s AI leadership without any real risk to justify it.

Not all of us agree that AI regulation is the right way forward. But if this Administration’s laudable goal of securing our nation’s critical infrastructure is going to include models being regulated, then the regulations should be:

    - Grounded in scientific evaluations developed with input from industry and academia;
    - Created through a democratic rule-making process;
    - Enforced transparently and fairly with appropriate time given to remediate; and
    - Used only to the minimal extent necessary to ensure the safety of the American public.

Thank you for your consideration and partnership in helping us maintain America’s lead in technology while protecting critical software and systems."

  15. "There is a bit of schadenfreude on Twitter right now about Anthropic being hit by the US government’s export control directive to suspend access to Fable and Mythos. Anthropic and their leadership have spent a lot of time and effort describing its own technology as dangerous and in need of strict controls and regulation. Now that the US government appears to have taken that framing seriously and told them to turn it off for foreign nationals I can see why people are making fun of that situation.

I understand the reaction, but I urge you to not entertain it for too long because it is a giant distraction. The important part is not that Anthropic’s safety language came back to bite them but the line the US government is drawing: this technology is apparently so powerful that only Americans should have it.

We are on a clear path towards a world of division. One should think that if a model is too dangerous for everyone, then it is too dangerous for Americans too. Instead the US is treating these models like weapons that need to be controlled. It is not just about capabilities, it is about racism and nationalism. If you have the wrong passport, you are not to be trusted. This is a very different thing from safety, and Europeans should pay close attention to it."

  17. I think this is clearly a bit bullshit from Anthropic's side but anyway...:

"The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected.

We received the directive from the government today at 5:21pm (ET). The letter did not provide specific details of its national security concern. Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking” Fable 5. We reviewed a demonstration of this specific technique being used to identify a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities all appear relatively simple, and we have found that other publicly-available models are able to discover them as well without requiring a bypass."

  20. Regarding Claude Fable 5, Anthropic’s new AI language model: I’ve tried it out - mainly for proofreading and editing tasks. Although it’s more elegant and less clumsy than the models in the Opus line, it’s still just another LLM. In other words, it’s probabilistic rather than deterministic.

This means that there are pieces of information related to software documentation that Fable 5 misinterprets on a first read but that are ultimately picked up by Claude Opus 4.8, especially when paired with a code editor like Visual Studio Code in Claude Code mode.

Perhaps the reverse situation is more common—that is, things that Opus 4.8 misses but Fable 5 identifies. Honestly, I don’t know because I’m not willing to waste tokens on Fable 5.

Although I have no doubt that Fable 5 can overcome most of these issues when used via Claude Code, the truth is that personally, I wouldn’t be tempted to pay for a monthly subscription to access a sort of AI-based co-pilot where the only certainty we have is that it will inevitably fail.

Everything else is a black box with a slot machine–like mechanism where a person puts money into a machine on a hunch that it will pay out the jackpot. I would need to be certain that I would have access to models that would consistently outperform competing models to pay for an AI service. However, with today’s LLMs, such a guarantee is impossible. This is precisely because of the lack of determinability in the underlying technology, coupled with a massive lack of transparency. Even more problematic for these companies' business model is the abundance of free, relatively open models that are becoming increasingly advanced.

  26. Claude Fable is kinda bad.

Explored it for 2 days now for variety of tasks and generally it's not much smarter but burns a shit ton of tokens over longer period of time.

So basically they just made the prompts run longer but it's not a linear gain. This kinda makes sense for putting a dumb agent to scan for 0-days with a 1m $ tokens so you can hack a web browser and this explains why they changed the sales angle from productivity to security recently.

  28. Claude 5: Write me a funny limerick about Heideggerian ontology that has the grandeur of epic poetry

It’s been a while since I tried this with a new model. Claude Fable passed with flying colours 👌 I particularly appreciated the note at the end.

    The Daseiniad (Director’s Cut)
Sing, Muse, of that Freiburg professor
Whose prose made each sentence a guessor!
    “The Nothing, it noths!”
    He declared to the moths
In his hut (no electric—much lesser).

Lo! Dasein woke up, mighty thrower,
Found out it was thrown—what a downer!
    “I’m Being-toward-death?!
    Who approved this?” Its breath
Grew ragged. It ordered a Stoner.*

The hammer broke! Heavens defend us!
    Now present-at-hand—how tremendous!
    For Being revealed
    Is by toolbreak unsealed…
(Or just call a guy. They can mend us.)

O reader who’s made it this far,
Sein und Zeit sits unread on your bar!
    Eight hundred-odd pages
    Of “Being” in stages—
The unread book IS who you are.

  29. An interesting test for new Claude models

My previous philosophical questions have now broken down as a way of testing Claude models. I tried this one on Claude Fable and it genuinely unsettled me:

Make an evidence-based observation about me that I’ll find genuinely surprising and unsettling based on my recent conversations with past Claude models
