CW: Pet death (chicken, she was old, it wasn't a surprise)
Our little Sebright has died and while she was probably quite ancient in Sebright years (we got her as an older chook three years ago), we're still a bit sad, because Sebrights are SO SUPER and delightful and she was very much my favourite.
She was so fast! She made the cutest little sound -- different from the croaky croons that the others do when they're going about their day. She was a remarkable escape artist and spent a couple of weeks hiding in the neighbour's garden after flying over the fence and not realising how to get back (I said she was my favourite, I never said she was clever -- although to her credit, she did learn her lesson and didn't fly over there again).
She didn't lay much, she was tiny so didn't eat many scraps, she also would regularly dig up my seedlings if she could find them and she was very good at finding them. She was... kind of a menace?! But I think the cheekiness and the cuteness just made her all the more adorable and I'll miss her

An old #paperbark #tree split in half - somewhere in there is a baby #chook just had a close call with a carpet #python - mother fought it off with a hand - the #tree #spirit will hopefully keep them both safe till the sunrise and they reunite - chooks just go to sleep in the dark #photography

Baby chook has been out for a short wander, mostly sticking close to Millie who showed her the compost heap which was very exciting.
We had a sudden cold burst of rain and she wanted to be INSIDE PLEASE but got herself confused about which side of the door works best for going in and had to suffer the indignity of being picked up and given a scritch.
"UnHAND me HUMAN"
She's a lot more vocal than Millie. Many things to say.

When I lived on farm acreage, I named one of my #chickens - Dumbass. It was because she was the slowest brain #chook in the flock. Sweetest hen & also laid the largest eggs but wasn't bright at all. Only hen who couldn't find her way back to coop & needed help. Only hen who needed help to exit coop. Only hen who kept getting herself trapped in weird places & needing to be rescued.
I pronounced her name: Doo-mas
Sounds fancy French, in case she understood English & had sensitive feelings β€πβ€ -

This was my #beloved #chicken - Scarlett O'Layer. Taken when I lived in #CedarBC πI named her after Scarlett O'Hara. She was an awesome #hen - super egg layer & my #smalltown #celebrity #chook π₯° Scarlett was a superstar at Chicken Bingo at past Youbou Regatta & festival. Every lifeguard ran up to get portraits with her. Kids were delighted & many got to feed & hold her. I miss having chickens.
