@jwarminsky nearly all of my work at The Ardmoreite (Okla.) just disappeared after tech company #CherryRoad bought it in 2022.

What's worse: they also stopped contributing to Newsbank, meaning there aren't even any OCR archives through the local library anymore.

These all seem like weird "solutions to help America's newspapers serve their communities."

It took #cherryroad two years to come up with a "community conversations" campaign?

This has been my regularly scheduled criticism of the local #CherryRoad newspaper...

...but for every criticism I make are two moves being made in an effort to make things better for the nearly 50k people in #cartercountyok #Oklahoma

Just days after I wrote this open letter to the "publisher" of the local #newspaper, they stopped sending news copy to NewsBank to be digitally archived. #CherryRoad

I'm unsure how or if any local newsprint is being archived since printed editions at the local library are regularly stolen.

This was in early 2022 when #CherryRoad first bought the paper. In one year they rehired one staff writer for a few weeks, and two other freelancers popped up on occasion.

In February 2023 they finally rehired another staff writer.

In a county with 48k people, 7 municipal governments, 9 public school systems, multiple law enforcement agencies and smack in the middle of a federally-recognized Native American nation, the largest newspaper has one staff writer.

I will soon be reaching out to the former newspaper publisher and the publisher of a local quarterly magazine in #ArdmoreOK about what will be needed to start a local newsroom, because #CherryRoad isn't getting the job done after two years.

I also just sent this to #CherryRoad CEO Jeremy Gulban, who is the self-proclaimed publisher of The Ardmoreite and over 70 other newspapers across the country.
