I picked up “Cast n Chill” on Steam two days ago and I’ve just finished getting all the achievements.
It’s a very pretty and very easy cozy game. It’s still on special, and you can even get it a little cheaper if you already have Dredge in your Steam library.
You start with a flimsy rod, a little bob, a row-boat, and a dog (or cat). You catch fish and sell them to upgrade your gear (but not your faithful companion). There’s several different kinds of fish to find and several different locations to search for them in.
The pixel artwork looks amazing and the game delivers a pretty immersive experience, partly because the UI is mostly invisible, with the player clicking on different regions of the screen to give commands. Click above your boat to change your rig, left or right of the boat to turn the boat around and start fishing. Click the edges of the screen to pull anchor and drive in that direction. Journal in the bottom left corner, game menu in the top right corner.
I love games that can effectively hide their UI from view while still being perfectly accessible. My first experience with this idea was in the original Homeworld game, and this title also does it really nicely. I like how there isn’t even a “Start game” button. You open the game and you’re playing right where you left off.
The game has an idle mode too. If you leave the game running, it will basically begin to play the main gameplay loop of catching and selling fish by itself. You could probably run it at work under the guise of a screensaver.
I was only planning to write a few words, like “neat game” but ended up with this toot. A nice little indie title. Thumbs up.
