Our Way West 1
From Pentwater, Michigan to Dodge City, KSAfter two wonderful weeks in Michigan, it was time to leave. But we weren’t too sad, as we were heading to the Grand Canyon! Here, we would volunteer as camp hosts for two and a half months – from August 15th to October 31st. But first, we would have to get there! We planned to take 15 days to make the journey.
Day 1 (8/1/2026) was from Pentwater, Michigan to Delphi, Indiana. This was our 7th time at the Wabash and Erie Canal Park Campground. This is a small campground which offers a small museum and canal tours. The campground really warrants a longer visit than just our overnight stay, but that is all we seem to manage. There are also cute little cabins that can be rented. I have always felt that this place was a hidden gem.
Wabash and Erie Canal CampgroundWe always enjoy visiting with Roger, the campground host. He has been our host every visit. He is friendly, helpful and personable. We always look forward to seeing him. When we checked in upon our arrival, we could only chat with Roger a bit as we had to hurry and get set up before rain began for the rest of the night.
Thank you, Roger, and Best Wishes! In the morning, we had to stop and say goodbye to Roger. During our short talk upon arrival, we learned Roger and his wife were retiring – to Florida! They have been camp hosts here for eight years at the Wabash and Erie Canal Park. We likely won’t see him again. We wanted to thank him for being such a friendly host over our many visits. So, thank you, Roger, and all the best to you and your wife as you start this next chapter – in sunny Florida!
After saying goodbye to Roger, on Day 2 (8/2/2026) we drove to Casey KOA. Not much to report here. We wanted to go into the town, see all the giant attractions (like a pencil, wind chimes, mailbox) and eat dinner out. However, there is no Uber here. Since our next campground was “Lazy Days”, we decided to get into the spirit of things and be lazy. So, we didn’t bother to unhook. Hopefully, we’ll see all those giant things in Casey another time.
Now Day 3 (8/3/2026) has much more to report. As we made our way to Lazy Days Campground in Montgomery City, Missouri, we had a detour. There had been a truck fire accident on Highway 70, and we had to get off the highway. Following GPS blindly like trained rats, it took us off the highway and down a dirt road which dead-ended with two orange barricades. There was no turn around. Dan tried to make a u-turn which got us stuck in the mud. It didn’t look muddy which is why I suggested a u-turn. It was either that or back up almost a mile. We should have backed up.
What the heck? Oh No!To the side of this road was a large construction area. Since we were in a construction zone, those workers came over. In fact, two safety officers stayed with us the entire time. And oh yes, they told us the road had been closed for months. Nothing is down that road. Nothing. So why wasn’t the road barricaded at the entrance?
Fortunately, we have Triple AAA RV. We always have ever since we got our first travel trailer. It must have been our lucky day, as we only had to wait about 20 minutes for a tow truck after calling Triple AAA. The tow truck came and pulled us out. At that point, Dan had to back up the truck and the travel trailer about half the way to a small road into the construction area. Once there, he backed into the road, turned and got going the right way. Out.
Our Site at Lazy DaysWe arrived later than we had planned at the Lazy Days campground. But that’s okay. It’s another good reason to only travel about 200 – 250 miles per day. In case something happens, there is time to try to get it resolved, so you can still arrive at the campground with plenty of daylight. Note: To the forces that be, I am knocking on wood, so don’t jinx me!
While planning our route to the Grand Canyon, I figured in a couple of times where we would stay two nights. Fortunately, this was one of those longer stops. We were glad to have this extra time.
The next day, you’d think we would have rested. But not us. We were done being lazy. It turns out Lazy Days allows campers to wash their camper – for an extra fee. We had wanted to get our camper washed before heading to Michigan, but we weren’t organized enough. And that little incident in the mud worsened the situation. Since most campgrounds don’t allow campers to be washed, we took advantage of this opportunity and washed our camper as best as we could. Of course, even Dan couldn’t reach the top sections, but the camper still looked very much improved after the washing. After that, I decided I wanted to be lazy again, so I went to the campground pool.
Day 5 (8/5/2026) was another boring day, thank goodness. We drove to the Topeka Kansa, KOA. The only thing I would say is that there is currently a project to make Highway 70 three lanes from Wentzville, Missouri (near St. Louis) to Blue Springs (near Kansas City). So, we went through LOTS of construction for two days. At one point on this day, we were re-routed off of the highway. I was nervous, but it worked out fine. GPS behaved this time.
For Charla I thought this Puzzle Wall was interesting at the Topeka KOA. Some were signed with a name, date and time. One even said 4:30 a.m.! For Campers EverywhereThe next day, Day 6 (8/6/2026) we drove to the KOA in Dodge City, Kansas. As most folks know, Kansas is pretty flat. I was surprised to see two scenic overlooks as we neared Dodge City. Any guesses as to what these spots overlooked? Let me know in the comments below.
We really liked this KOA. It didn’t have a pool, but the KOA was adjacent to a city park. Within walking distance was a fabulous looking water park. Also, the lady at the check-in had a large bag of homegrown grape tomatoes. She offered them, and I took advantage of that several times over our two days there. The KOA was also close enough to walk to the Cowboy Capital for dinner which we did. It was less than one mile each way.
That night, to our surprise, there was a hail storm. Yep. Over 100 degrees during the day, and large hail pounding us at dark. I can make stuff up, but I can’t make this stuff up. The next morning, we didn’t see any major damage, just a beautiful sunrise. We did see a couple dings on our truck, but they are hardly noticeable. There’s more to the story though , and you’ll find out a couple of blog posts down the line.

An eight-minute exchange at the end of #Casey #Means’ two-hour confirmationhearing captured the potential and the predicament the MAHA movement has created for itself.
Means -- an entrepreneurial wellness influencer with a medical degree from Stanford -- appeared on Wednesday at the Senate health committee -- to be confirmed as the U.S. #surgeon #general.
She came prepared with testimony focused on the rise of chronic disease and the need for
“restoring wholeness for Americans
— physically, mentally, and societally.”
As a leader of health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 👉 "Make America Healthy Again" movement,
she received a friendly reception for many of her positions on improving nutrition, finding the “root causes” of diseases, and fighting the sometimes harmful effects of social media on children. But at the beginning and end of the hearing, she found herself being pressed on the issue of #vaccination by committee chair Bill Cassidy (R-La.), -- himself a physician.
Cassidy provided the pivotal vote a year ago to confirm Kennedy as health secretary,
but only after extracting various promises from Kennedy on vaccines
— many of which have been broken.
On Wednesday, Cassidy appeared determined to revisit the issue.
One of his first questions to Means was about “promotion of vaccine skepticism.”
Means repeatedly invoked "shared decision-making"
— a term that is itself contentious
— between doctors and parents,
called for more research studies about potential links between vaccine and autism
-- despite long-settled answers,
and demonstrated support for new vaccine guidelines put in place by a vaccine advisory panel remade by Kennedy to reflect his views.Cassidy’s initial questions covered measles, flu, and whooping cough,
which is having an outbreak in his state of Louisiana.“Children have actually died from it.
Think about it, about the age of your child dying from a vaccine-preventable disease. And some have been scared to vaccinate their children because they’ve been told incorrectly that vaccines cause autism,” he said.
“Do you believe that vaccines, whether individually or collectively, contribute to autism?”
⚠️Means did not answer directly, but praised the administration for committing $50 millions in funding to look at environmental factors that might contribute to autism.
Cassidy wanted more on vaccines being falsely linked to autism.
“A lot of evidence is showing that they’re not implicated. Do you not accept that evidence?” he asked.
“I do accept that evidence. ⚠️I also think that science is never settled,” she replied.
Most contentious was the question of when to give hepatitis B vaccines.
Despite overwhelming evidence in favor of giving doses to newborns
(a 90% reduction in infections),
the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance leaves that decision to parents and doctors,
-- overturning a universal recommendation to administer the vaccine at birth to prevent serious liver disease.Other senators of both parties also took up the theme of vaccines.
Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) spoke of hepatitis B risk among Native populations in western Alaska.
“I need to try to understand your thinking on that,
given the medical consensus that this vaccine prevents this serious liver disease
and liver cancer
that we again were able to demonstrate in real time, real life,
with that recommendation
and now the view that you seem to be taking on this is not necessary for newborn,” Murkowski said.

After a long period of deprivation, the markets in Gaza were filled with all kinds of delicious fruits, vegetables and food. But after famine and war devoured people’s pockets, all that remained for us was to watch from afar, walking in the markets with tearful eyes, and suffering from the goods that we are deprived of without being able to buy them. We watch and do not buy.

'In the local data that the audit examined from three [THREE] police forces, they identified clear evidence of “over-representation among suspects of Asian and Pakistani-heritage men”.
'However, the review also criticised the ongoing failure to collect ethnicity at a national level, with it not recorded for two-thirds of perpetrators, making it impossible “to provide any accurate assessment from the nationally collected data”.'
Not so conclusive then.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is lying about his pick for surgeon general’s qualifications.
During an appearance on Fox News Thursday night, Kennedy attempted to defend his choice of #Casey #Means,
a wellness influencer and author who has no active medical license and never completed her physician residency.
But, as is typical for the anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist, in lieu of evidence, Kennedy just made stuff up.
“She was the top of her med—the very top of her medical class at Stanford,” Kennedy said.
“She is in every—during her residency, she won every award that she could win. She walked away from traditional medicine because she was not curing patients. She couldn’t get anybody within her profession to look at the nutrition contributions to illness,” Kennedy said.
But it would’ve been impossible for Means to be at the top of her class at the Stanford School of Medicine,
because students aren’t actually ranked there.
A spokesperson from the school told CNN’s Daniel Dale that medical students are graded on a pass-fail system.
Kennedy’s claim that Means quit her residency to walk away from traditional medicine is also untrue.
Dr. Paul Flint, a former chair of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Oregon Health and Science University who helped oversee Means during her residency program, provided a completely different explanation for why she had walked away from her five-year residency program after four and a half years.
“She wasn’t even sure she wanted to be in medicine. She wanted to do something different. She wanted to resign,” Flint told The Los Angeles Times.
Means was under so much anxiety that she was given three months paid time off.
“She did that, came back and decided she wanted to leave the program.
She did not like that level of stress,” Flint said.
Flint said there was “a lot of anxiety around” being a surgeon. “You become much more responsible the more senior you get,” he explained.
Now, Means may become the surgeon general, the highest ranking doctor in the country.
Or in her case, the highest ranking non-practicing “doctor.”
Kennedy argued in a post on X Thursday that Means’s lack of qualifications were exactly what made her such a great fit with his Make America Healthy Again agenda.
No, seriously.
“The attacks that Casey is unqualified because she left the medical system completely miss the point of what we are trying to accomplish with MAHA.
Casey is the perfect choice for Surgeon General precisely because she left the traditional medical system
—not in spite of it,” he wrote.

#Souter closed by reiterating that #Casey, & #Roe, were about far more than simply #abortion:
“A decision to overrule Roe's essential holding under the existing circumstances would address error, if error there was,at the cost of both profound & unnecessary damage to the Court's #legitimacy, & to the Nation's commitment to the rule of #law. It is therefore imperative to adhere to the essence of Roe's original decision, & we do so today."
