This Murray River wetland is a glimpse of a carp-free future
Managers shut the wetland off from the river, dried it out to kill the carp, then carefully refilled it with screens that keep big carp out. Result: crystal-clear water, thriving aquatic plants, native fish, frogs, turtles & birds.
European carp still dominate much of the Murray–Darling (up to 90% of biomass in some spots) and the river downstream of the Darling is now listed as critically endangered. The carp herpes virus is still 2 years off, so these local exclusion trials are showing what’s possible right now.
