I am old enough to remember how easy it used to be to send a fax using a fax machine. Later on, it wasn't too much of a stretch to do so via a computer with a fax modem.

While email has largely replaced this, I on very rare occasion am required to send an old-school fax. What do you all do when you (or those who ask you tech-support questions over the holidays) need to send a fax to a traditional fax machine without having your own landline?

After almost 30 years of want, I finally got the opportunity to have a fiber optic internet connection in my home.

The initial installation last Friday was buggy but the reinstallation today, with a free equipment and speed upgrade, has given a stable experience, so far 🤞🏿

Ironically, AT&T is now out of the landline business outside of a few states, and certain circumstances, so I'm stuck with Xfinity for that service, for my mom.

I spent more time than I expected Saturday morning studying the Mississippi law requiring social platforms to verify the ages of new users, which has some confusing and vague parts. I’m not sure that this statute is quite as bad as Bluesky portrays it, but I am sure that Facebook and Instagram are in just as much trouble–which makes Meta’s silence on this issue look sketchy.

While I'm aware of the various de-googled versions of Android, and various other Linux-based non-Android platforms, I'm afraid I can't offer any recommendations, because I have no experience with any of them - or of Android or IOS, either. I don't have a smartphone. Or a dumbphone.

The others contributing in this thread have mentioned some I wasn't familiar with. Anecdotally, running any non-mainstream phone OS means putting up with a lot of quirks, but perhaps they have had better experiences.

Had a thought over the weekend that our #VoIP service has a separate E911 entry from the main account, and the address might not be sync'd.

Sure enough that's the case - if you have an E911 provider, you should prob check that. If I'd called 911 they would've been dispatched to the old place. Ugh. Fixed now.

The state agency also urged AT&T to upgrade copper facilities to fiber instead of trying to shut down the outdated portions of its network.

AT&T asked the state to eliminate its Carrier of Last Resort (COLR) obligation, which requires it to provide landline telephone service to any potential customer in its service territory. A CPUC administrative law judge recommended rejection of the application last month, and the commission voted to dismiss AT&T's application with prejudice on Thursday.

"Our vote to dismiss AT&T's application made clear that we will protect customer access to basic telephone service... Our rules were designed to provide that assurance, and AT&T's application did not follow our rules," Commissioner John Reynolds said in a CPUC announcement."

Never heard of this Community Telephone company. But $40/month for phone service still seems too expensive even if it is a copper line. VoIP line is still the way to go IMHO.
