Worked around a weird issue with #CapRover deploying using the wrong Docker platform so decided to do a write up

Running #CapRover locally from source, I just saw the new Docker Compose deploy option in the dashboard
It feels inspired by what #Coolify is doing: instead of only single-container apps, you can now spin up multi-service stacks directly. Super handy for real-world apps (db + backend + worker, etc)
And the classic One-Click Apps are still great for creating apps where the admin is asked questions that will generate a set of containers with their params

Just deployed @linuxserver's #webtop with #CapRover in 1 click, **from my phone** to my server
Now I have a full #Linux desktop in my browser. Perfect while my laptop’s at the repair shop for 5 days.
If you're curious, I can share how it holds up in daily use

Anyone have experience with #CapRover? I'm thinking it's a better solution to deploying web apps to my VPS than my current setup, particularly if I set up some git hooks. I would want to run a mail server on it too though, and I'm not sure how it would get on with that...

Plus this is only http://v3.silex.me, but tere is the @puter integration

Really digging these new recent updates to https://caprover.com/.
Changelog: https://github.com/caprover/caprover/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md
Screenshot of the new project structure which lets me group deployables together (think: a web and background worker deploy for a particular project).
More details about how I use #CapRover to serve multiple #Django projects from one #DigitalOcean #VPS: https://alldjango.com/articles/serve-multiple-django-sites-from-one-cloud-server.

My website https://taylormadetech.dev/ is now off of Heroku and self hosted on Hetzner using Caprover
It's such a nice stack, took me 30~ minutes to go from creating a new VPS to having a website up and running

With a lot of help from @tobide
version 2.15.0 of https://github.com/adamghill/build-docker-and-deploy-to-caprover has now been released. This release slugifies the Docker image name since some characters are not allowed there. It also provides a way to specify a custom Docker image name.
#CapRover is a #SelfHosted #PaaS. It allows me to not worry about serving lots of low traffic side websites. See https://alldjango.com/articles/serve-multiple-django-sites-from-one-cloud-server for a long article about how I serve ~10 #Django sites from one low-cost VPS.

Tweaked https://github.com/adamghill/build-docker-and-deploy-to-caprover a bunch tonight to fix an issue with the deployments for https://fediview.com. Hopefully, the site will be more stable from now on.
I’ve been using https://github.com/marketplace/actions/build-docker-and-deploy-to-caprover to deploy all of my side projects to #CapRover running on Digital Ocean and it's been pretty useful!
If you want to know more about CapRover, I wrote a guide to using it with #Django (although the guide is mostly webserver agnostic since it just uses Docker): https://alldjango.com/articles/serve-multiple-django-sites-from-one-cloud-server. ☁️

And one last thing, this is how I manage my backups:
For my Django projects using SQLite (yeah, I'm seriously doing this), I use Litestream + S3.
When I need PostgreSQL, a single PostgreSQL server + pghoard for backup on S3 (this setup is a work in progress; I haven't completely figured it out for now). For the other apps, when I do care about the data, I use Offen-docker (one-click CapRover deploy again) to back up the entire data volumes on S3.

I'm sure for some medium company/startup, these platforms make sense, but for someone like me trying to hack stuff on his free time, the setup I described above makes more sense.

I've seen a lot of enthusiasm for Fly in the Django community lately. I've tried them once. I'm sure I was doing something wrong or had a trash setup, but I was paying more than $5 for frankly less than a third of the performance I'm getting on this $5 VPS. Platforms like Fly, Vercel, Heroku offer mainly convenience over your average VPS, but I can get 80% of the convenience with CapRover.

There is no way, no freaking way that there is a PaaS provider out there that can offer a setup that can rival my VPS with the specs I'm getting at this price. And if there is one, please, I want to know.
The specs :- 4 vCPU
- 6 GB RAM
- 100 GB NVMeIt's even weird that these guys can afford to be this cheap. Feels like there is something fishy going on. Maybe because of the trash UI? Anyway, I've had no issues with them for years.

Right now I have,
Firefly III (personal finance),
GlitchTip (Sentry-like error tracking),
Plausible (privacy-focused analytics),
Uptime Kuma (uptime service),
and a few Django side projects. All of these are running on a cheap ($5.5) VPS from Contabo using CapRover.
By the way, most of the apps described above are one-click deployable.

I really wish I could figure out how to use a redis.conf file when deploying #redis in #CapRover. The default “use infinite memory” and “never evict data” settings are pretty unhelpful.
And spending $15/month for managed redis on Digital Ocean just doesn’t seem worth it (it would also mean more network latency). 🤨
@tobide I think you use CapRover? Do you have a solution for redis?
-
since I want to start a blog (and still don't know how to write), I think a good start is on how the blog itself is hosted (everything I host is using the same method), thanks #caprover

Testuję aplikację #Mixpost, służącą do publikacji treści jednocześnie na Mastodon, Facebook i Twitter:
> "Self-hosted social media management. Schedule and organize your social content."
Open-source (wersja Lite), PHP i Laravel, MySQL i Redis.
Całość dość łatwa do postawienia na CapRover. Osoby zainteresowane zapraszam przed przerwą świąteczną na zajęcia z selfhosting z pomocą również #CapRover. -
My (self?)hosting setup
Vps from Hetzner (7,2 euros), that is hosting:
- FreshRSS
- RSS-Bride
- RSSHub
- Full-Text RSS (from FiveFilters)
- Vikunja
- Trilium Notes
- Memos
- Grocy
- UptimeKuma
- Portainer
- Homepage
All of that using my training wheels CapRover, so I don't have to know much of Docker and mainly reverse proxy. My domain I got from Spaceship (the same guys from Namecheap.

I've been donating to #caprover at https://opencollective.com/caprover for a while now, but I just signed up for the Pro plan at https://pro.caprover.com.
For $2/month it's a no-brainer for deployment monitoring and 2FA logins. I'm looking forward to what they add to the Pro plan going forward!

hmm, webfinger, cardav caldav being a PITA to get all green on my #nextcloud. Once I do, I should be able to have my #nextcloud user posting on the #fediverse via the social app.
It's probably something to do with #caprover nginx, its always caprover's nginx.
the instance now has #OpenStreetMaps, #Peertube search, #mastodon search (link accounts.)
I really need to master making my own caprover installs, then I know I can make sure all the things are set up tighter than these app defaults are.
-
god dammit, I think I need to migrate off of #Caprover, their support and general organization of that support between the apps and caprover itself is utter dogshit. when you cannot post app related issues to the github, your told to go to the app related forum, well, WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY?!?!
One #nextcloud install's cron behaves perfectly, the others install doesn't, they were installed at the same time, the same way, and nowhere I can report or get help figuring out why.
-
Shit I need to do this week:
- Finish my foodsafe lvl 1 course
- Update all software on my server
- Find the bloat happening on my server (I suspect its mysql binary logs) and write a purge script. Then ticket #caprover so they can ignore that their installations cause log bloat.
- Get a ticket to #peertube and the live stream plugin to work out this missing webhook issue on my instance.
- Clean up my #nextcloud I need a better solution for streaming music that takes up less space.
-
Wow, what annoy, the #caprover install for #wordpress leaves binary logging on in mysql and nothing set to clean them up so they just grow.... wtf. Good thing Im only hosting 4 wordpress sites, Going to need to get into their MYSQL, turn that off and purge logs, its racked up 8gb between them all.
-
Praying to the github issue gods that my request on this stupid #websockets issue with #PeerTube and #Caprover reveals a solution. Its the last major error in the dom when I inspect, and I suspect it is also causing issue with my stream hanging when being watched on other federated instances.
I know it has to be something to go into #NGINX as mentioned by Peertube but everything I do doesn't change a thing...
If any PeerTube or CapRover admins might have an idea of how to resolve I'm all ears.

CW: random side-project contributions
Contributed a one-click config to deploy #OhMyForm on #CapRover
Two very cool #foss projects to check out, btw!
https://caprover.com is basically a self-hosted #PaaS and can be used as an alternative to #heroku. Makes handling #docker #microservices a hell of a lot easier. Plus, it takes care of #letsencrypt certs.
https://ohmyform.com lets you create nice web forms to replace the likes of #googleforms. Does one thing, and does it admirably well!
