Just about 1 km from Paลabaฤ are the amazing cave churches of Zelve. Most of these date to the 9th and 10th centuries, but some are as early as the sixth. The area was inhabited until the 1950s.

When ma figghia and I are doing our #VirtualTravel through #Cappadocia and we watch travel videos of different sites, I get excited by the architecture and the iconography; she gets excited by the kids and balloons.

On the road between รavuลin and Zelve๐น๐ท, we stop at Paลabaฤ, also called "Monks Valley". Here the landscape displays the amazing multi-headed mushroom rock formations, some 15-20m high into which monks carved cells in the #Byzantine period to live a solitary life.

We've made a big loop and now it's time to head east, stopping at the village of รavuลin and the church of St John the Baptist, a rock cut church dating to the early 6th century (hear that, my #LateAntiquity & #Byzantine peeps??). It may be the oldest church in #Cappadocia ๐น๐ท

Next stop for ma figghia and me on our virtual tour of #Cappadocia ๐น๐ท is Uรงhisar! The main attraction here is Uรงhisar Castle. Located at the highest point in Cappadocia, it served as a defensive and domestic fortress from the Roman through Byzantine periods.
