  3. I have some computations that I am joblibbing. The RAM consumption is very predictable as a function of the processes. However, the swap is also creeping up and I have no idea what can be causing this. Is there a rule-of-thumb for predicting swap use in parallel operations ?

  5. 🥳🎉 Oh, look! Another self-proclaimed math #genius attempts to decipher Feynman's magical math tricks only to realize they can't count past ten without using their fingers. 🤔🧠 But fear not, because who needs to understand integration when you can just throw #calculations at a computer and hope for the best, right? 😂👌

  7. "These people, many of whom were women, were the first scientific programmers and computational scientists. Skilled in the complicated operation of early computing devices, they often had degrees in maths or science, and were an integral part of research efforts. And yet, their fundamental contributions are mostly forgotten."

  10. Calvin Liang: The Fed says this is a cube of $1M. They’re off by half a million.. “I first tried counting the stacks right there in the room. The cube was tall, so I had to step back to see the whole thing, squinting at the stacks, trying to follow each row. I lost track almost immediately. Also, people were starting to look at me funny. Apparently, staring intensely at a pile of cash while […]

  11. Not only is it of sentimental and historic value, I think it’s a testament to the skill of those who have made high-precision instruments through the ages. To this day, #CircularSliderules are used by trainee #Pilots to do #calculations and to convert units, etc. To me they’re a thing of beauty as well as utility.

  13. "[In 1687] Isaac Newton explained how the gravitational forces of the sun and the moon caused [the tides]. Nine decades later, the French astronomer and mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace suggested that the tides could be represented as harmonic oscillations. And a century after that, Thomson used that concept to design the first machine for predicting them."

  15. I’m trying to imagine what it would look like if #academic #publishing followed the same rules as #online #arguments.

    Paper: “#Harvard did a #study …”
Reviewer 1: “I am unaware of that study. Please provide a #citation.”
    Author’s response: “LOL #Google it!”

    Paper: “#Mathematical #calculations show …”
Reviewer 2: “There is an error in this #proof.”
    Author’s response: “Don’t fall for #BigMath’s #woke lies!”

    Paper: “#Scientists now believe …”
Reviewer 3: “The current #consensus strongly disagrees with this statement.”
Author’s response: “Think for yourself! Do your own #research!”

Ah, well, back to the real world, where I actually have to support my #claims.

djb - DuckDuckGo it if you aren't familiar - in his most recent blog post about the NIST standardization efforts for next-gen cryptography shows, quite clearly, how badly #NIST botched their #calculations. But perhaps more importantly, they have resisted all efforts to correct their mistake(s), or even acknowledge them.

I found it much easier to comprehend than his previous post. If you're interested in #cryptography and aren't scared of a little #math:
