  1. #CAISO started exporting power around 9 am, and at since 11 am has been exporting a #DiabloCanyon's worth of energy to neighboring balancing authorities. At the same time rn we're charging 6GWs of batteries. CAISO currently using 85% #renewables. caiso.com/todays-outlook/suppl #Energy #CAEnergy

  2. The #CAISO has released its #TransmissionPlan covering the next decade.

"The transmission projects identified in this plan over the next 10 years are driven primarily by increased load growth including building and transportation electrification, manufacturing, and large loads including data centers, and the state’s projection that the grid will need an additional 107 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2040."

  8. Both #ERCOT and #CAISO set new records for #battery discharge on Monday.

CAISO: At 18:10 PT Monday, 8.35 GW of energy was being discharged from batteries as solar energy declined toward sunset, representing 21.2% of load.

ERCOT: At 18:40 CT Monday, 3.94 GW of energy was being discharged from batteries as #SolarEnergy declined toward sunset, representing 6.1% of load.

In both regions, battery discharge declined rapidly within a few hours.

  9. #California’s #PowerGrid passed the reliability test this #HeatWave. It’s all about giant #batteries

"California’s power grid emerged from a nearly three weeklong record-setting heat wave relatively unscathed, and officials are crediting years of investment in #RenewableEnergy — particularly #GiantBatteries that store #SolarPower for use when the sun stops shining.

"'This was a good early test that we passed in very good shape,' said Elliot Mainzer, president and CEO of California Independent System Operator (#CAISO), on Monday. 'Investments in new clean energy and in dispatchable battery storage played a major role.'

"CAISO last issued calls for voluntary conservation two years ago, during a 2022 bout of #ExtremeHeat. Since then, roughly 11,600 megawatts of new #renewable energy sources have come onto California’s electricity grid. That includes 10,000 megawatts of battery power, enough to power 10 million homes for a few hours. California is now home to the most #GridBatteries in the world outside of China, Mainzer said. 'Batteries performed very well in this event, they were charged and ready at the right times for optimization on the grid,' he added. 'That made a big, big difference.'"

  11. Will be interesting to see how #CAISO load compares to previous extreme heat events during this period. This will break all-time records in part of the state, but there's a lot more #solar online and there will be blazing sunshine.

Will the real-time market hit the price cap? And if so, for how long?

  12. Strong wind generation, areas of strong solar, and mild temperatures producing fairly low load are driving low wholesale #energy prices throughout the #WECC today including in #CAISO. The dynamic market is even trading negative pricing in many places.

This feels like the start of Q2, which is typically mild and so flush with energy (hydro with spring runoff) that pricing is usually quite low even with many fossil fuel generators offline for maintenance.

  14. The reemergence of Lake Tulare south of Hanford, California is threatening about 1 GW of #solar #energy as well as 140 MW of battery storage.

For context, forecast peak demand in #CAISO today is 27.7 GW.

  15. CAISO has added a 'hybrid' panel to break out energy supply from facilities which combine wind or solar with storage:

Some of these have existed for quite a few years, but the separate breakdown in public information is new.
