  1. I notice something utterly weird yesterday when using my C64. My typing patterns reverted to 12 year old me muscle memory, when I learned to type so my Dad would let us get a printer for the house.

My early typing years were either a C64, or a manual typewriter.

    However, the switched +/-, ", *, ↑, etm.

  4. Hello. I would like to hear from #c64u users who have upgraded to 1.1.0 and have tried using a mouse.

In spite of setting up GeOS properly for mouse input, my M325 acted funky, as well as a regular steelseries mouse. I have heard others having similar oddities.

There may be something I missed.

  6. @deanjimmy

My heart lept! I had a 2600 with the same form factor as your 7800.

I had thought much the same. I've paid more indie artists from .d81's of games for my #mega65 and #c64u than commercial game purchases.

So inquring question: What's that device attached to your 64's joystick ports near the power input on the right?

  8. @halfpress very interested to hear your thoughts on the armsid's performance. I'm tempted to get a daughter board for my #rc2014 that accepts it, as well as potentially for fiddling with my #c64u

  10. It took 6 months, but my #C64U finally arrived and it's lovely!

Feels authentic, works great, and is even impressing an old #ZXSpectrum veteran like me.

I've got it using a Kernel ROM called "DolffyDOS", which is a mix of DolphinDOS and JiffyDOS. This really speeds up loading.

Love the little touches, like being able to FTP to it... though the cassette USB stick is both wonderful and terrible at the same time, and who thought to put the SD card slot inside the case!?

  12. I have named my #c64u Edgar for reasons you may appreciate.

It's cool - I have no cello playing love interests.

    That I know of anyhow?

  14. After a bit of time playing with the TeensyROM cartridge I can honestly say it's the best thing I've bought for any computer I've owned since my ZSA moonlander.

    • bought it for the fast load features (Ethernet and SID management are made redundant by the ultimate)
    • delighted that can handle MIDI over USB
    • blown away by being able to quickly blast in crts from NFC tags.

Being able to play my C64 like a more traditional instrument was a powerful thing. No lie, I teared up when I was able to play the 13th Bach Invention straight from my keys.

  15. @Kroc without getting hung up on specific words like "sincere", the point I'm making is that there is an awful lot of mud slinging that does not seem justified.

But if we are going to do that a definition for sincere is "Being without hypocrisy or pretense; true."

I've yet to see Peri fall short of promises or play spin games. I'm wondering if he truly realized what a lightening rod he'd become by taking on such a storied brand.

However, the proof that he's done better than anyone else in the last 30+ is the #C64U on my desk.

  17. yeah nah, its cute and all but i think they’re missing too many marks with this

the condescension in the faqs is a turn off

maximum microsd support of 256gb is a non-starter as my music library is bigger than that before i start talking photos 🤷‍♂️ “its to stop you from hoarding apps”, team for NZD$1000+ its none of your business, actually. you’re making a virtue out of a cheaper capability choice.

no 5G support. not my experience that 4g coverage is ubiquitous or reliable here 🤷‍♂️

all in all, i should be a sucker for this (like the #c64u)

but there’s a premium here on what’s not included

  19. You know, I LOVE the #C64U. And I have no regrets on that. It's a great product.

A great product they acquired from a community member who was already selling the boards, sure, but they shaped it up into a decent, commercial product.

But the new 'Commodore' always had a certain vibe to it that was triggering my spidey senses.

I ignored it, though, because the product looked (and was) solid.

The "digital detox" nonsense branding was my first red flag. Positioning themselves as a smug alternative to being "online" -- I thought that was misguided. But it's a marketing angle, and it didn't get in the way. Whatever.

But I always thought they had a limited amount of runway: you brought back the C64. Awesome. But they seemed to have ambitions beyond that. Okay, where else could you go?

Making a new, upgraded C64 perhaps. But you just sold people on the C64U. Will they buy another?

The C128 was a possibility, but even though the 128 is the machine closest to my heart, I can admit that wouldn't have been worth the effort. There wasn't nearly enough 128-specific software written to justify it.

The Amiga would have been THE way to go: it doesn't feel redundant after a C64U purchase, and there's a whole galaxy of software and love for it. Unfortunately the rights are tied up with another company making that a difficult lift. Not "buying Commodore itself" levels of a lift, but not trivial.

Beyond that... I couldn't have guessed a fucking scammy looking $500-700 fucking flip phone.

    Are you fucking kidding me?

All that faith and trust built up after the C64U vanished overnight. And I feel a tiny twinge of embarrassment by association even owning one now.

This feels like a bad, weird dream.

  23. fwiw its a 5 star review and if you bought a c64u the jiffydos rom replacement is worth it. but. i don’t think i’m coming back to the website and trying to comply a third time. they didn’t even offer a prize draw inducement! no good deed goes unpunished #c64u

  27. Mein #commodore64ultimate #c64u hat jetzt 2x 16 GByte interne Massenspeicher. Etwas overkill, aber lag halt so herum.

  29. I forgot to mention that all the stated drives are virtualized and not real hardware. Just to make sure, that everbody is talking about the same. 😅

  31. I'm currently trying to find out, why the Star Wars C64 demo created by Censor Design freezes on the C64 Ultimate. With a stock DOS 1541 drive the demo freezes after swapping to and playing disk 2 for a while. If you use a 1571 drive instead, the demo runs just fine.
I think I could track it down to the fact, that this demo uses 40-Track D64 images.
I would really like to know, if this is a "bug" in the C64U firmware or if this is some other kind of limitation or configuration issue.
Perhaps someone out there has a bit more deep dive information to push me in the right direction?
