C/2022 E3 (ZTF)
C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a long-period comet from the Oort cloud that was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) on March 2, 2022. The comet has a bright green glow around its nucleus, due to the effect of sunlight on diatomic carbon and cyanogen. It’s closest approach to Earth was on February 1, 2023, at a distance of 0.28 AU (42 million km; 26 million mi).

I know I am kind of late to the party. But in my defense: When I checked where the comet was in the sky when I first heard about it, it was in the north, and my house was blocking the view. I didn't realize that it will be coming around to the south where I can image it.

The broad white dust tail and the long narrow blue ion tail are clearly visible. The coma shines brightly in green color at 518 nm wavelength, emitted by C2 (dicarbon) atoms.

Finally got a view of #comet C/2022E3 (ZTF)! Only had a few minutes before the clouds rolled in (again).
Still much processing to do though.
This is 27 x 3 second exposures with a Nikon Z50 with a 300mm lens on a tripod (no star tracker).
I *really* need a better setup for #astrophotography.

This is my best photo of Comet C/2022 E3. This green comet passed Earth for the first time in 50,000 years. It was last visible in the night sky during the Stone Age. 48,000 b.c.e.
But we have had gray skies forever (of course right?).

It is very much not a "once-in-50,000-years" event. There are tens of thousands of comets like it.

And here it is! Comet ‘C/2022 E3 (ZTF)’!
This image is a stack of 9 images, each taken with 30s of exposure. I configured the stacking software (Lynkeos) to track the comet instead of the stars in the background, hence they look blurred while the comet looks stationary.
Taken with a Nikon Z 6ii, AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm (@300mm), ISO 640, 30s, ƒ/5.6. All mounted on a Sky-Watcher EQM 35 WiFi go-to azimuthal mount.

The comet's ion tail is formed as a result of ionization of particles in the coma by solar ultra-violet radiation; the particles are then propelled by the solar wind.
The ion tail tends to be long and narrow. The ion tail shines through fluorescence and is blue in color. The dominant CO+ molecule in the tail absorbs sunlight which it then re-emits at the blue 420 nanometer wavelength.

Like other comets, C/2022 E3 (ZTF) has a dust tail trailing behind the comet and a glowing ion tail, pointing away from the Sun, formed from gases ionized by UV radiation from the Sun.
The dust tail is also affected by solar radiation and hence is oriented a bit away from the sun.

Here is an updated light curve from http://astro.vanbuitenen.nl/comet/2022E3 with magnitude (brightness) values of Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF). This graph predicts a magnitude value of around 5 on Feb 1, at closest approach to earth.
Objects with lower magnitude values are brighter. The human eye can detect objects with magnitude < 6. With a good pair of 10x50 binoculars, one can observe objects at magnitude 11 and lower .
