PC Gamers Abandoning Windows 11 for Linux with Higher FPS & Fewer Interruptions
https://www.geeky-gadgets.com/linux-gaming-performance/
> The ongoing migration of gamers from Windows 11 to Linux reflects a broader dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s current operating system. Performance concerns, intrusive update policies, and the increasing appeal of Linux are driving this shift.

It seems for the second time, I have bought PC components at the right time. End of 2016, I happened to be ahead of the GPU price increases because of bitcoin mining in 2017-2018. End of 2023, I was ahead of the RAM price increases because of AI data centers today, end of 2025.
This is pure luck.

So on the weekend we did some upgrades. My oldest kid was swapping out CPU, so I realized... spare cpu, spare SSD, spare GPU, and I've got crappy old RAM in my box. Upgrade RAM on my machine and I just need mobo, psu, and case for a new PC for my middle kid. #BuildaPC ...

New battle station is together. There's a vertical RGB strip next to the side intake fans that isn't lit up, and I've got an adapter coming tomorrow that will let me sync the GPU RGB with all the rest of it, so hopefully I can fix the strip while installing the adapter.
Pretty pleased with the build though. It's running much cooler and quieter than my AM4 build was. I still need to do some BIOS tweaks, run benchmarks, memtest86, etc.
Storage out the ass on this. Plan is to have two drives for each OS and dual-boot Windows 11 and CachyOS.

hey hardware advice fedi,
so I've recently got a pci e card for more usb ports
but apparently I ordered a different thing than I thought
bc it's for a pci e x1 slotbut my CPU supports only
Up to 1x16+4, 2x8+4pci configurations
(if I didn't mess up, my nvme ssd is sata, not pci e. so only pci e in use is my gpu so far)what do you think?

After much hardship, I have finally finished building my PC. It's not a high-end PC but it's way better than what I had before. I'm currently using Bazzite so it's also my first non-Windows computer as well.
-
My first attempt at building my computer failed when I discovered that my GPU was just a slight bit too large for my case. My SteamDeck will have to keep moonlighting as my desktop for a bit longer while I hunt down a larger case.

A power supply (PSU) left outside in sub 0c temps, inside it's packaging/shipment box, for 2+ days... Will this introduce issues in the power supply once it's acclimatized? Condensation?

The (final?) list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/99MCLc
I think I've just about settled on all the major pieces and will be taking a look at prices tomorrow to see if anything else is more on sale. The whole build is coming in at under $1,000 which is pretty good for a whole new gaming computer. The only part I'm carrying over from my existing setup is the Nvidia 2070 Super, everything else is new.
The last couple things I need to get might be a fan and some thermal paste.
I'm also hoping I don't have to do too much to get a Windows 11 license.

Did case fans always come without threading screw holes? Am I hallucinating that they did or is AliExpress gaslighting me.
In partially related news, it's bloody hard to screw 80mm fans into a rackmount case without threaded screw holes.
I do have a 90 degree ratcheting screwdriver that probably would have helped, but I've misplaced it somewhere.

Ok! Spouse build 1st draft. Yikes.
Time to watch some prices and read some reviews!

Considering the situation unfolding next year, does anyone have recommendations for a PC that can game a bit for a few years under $700? Bonus for NAS enclosure recs so I can shove my old computer inside it

Yeah, so I did that, designed a high-end build that I can eventually upgrade to and then stripped out everything where I have low-end parts that I can use temporarily. I got it down to about 1000USD. Here are the results:
High-end: https://se.pcpartpicker.com/user/adal/saved/#view=3nV3Hx
Low-end skeleton: https://se.pcpartpicker.com/user/adal/saved/#view=XqfrmG
I'm still figuring out the case and fan situation and deciding on which PSU I want. I want to compare that ASUS one to the Ion Gold that Fractal recommends.

I mean... You're free to buy me this if you prefer to avoid the carnage 😉😉😉 https://se.pcpartpicker.com/list/vxKHxg

Alright, I spent all day picking parts for PCs that I'll never buy — my version of window shopping, but now I figured out what I will actually do and it's crazy: I'm going to build a 5950X on a B550... but with a GeForce 1030 GT. 😂 Yes, that's the one that's so low-end that it doesn't even have a fan, passivly cooled. Why? Because that's what I have free and I'll upgrade it later. I'll also see if I can use my old DDR4 and my current SSD. I can upgrade these all gradually over time. #buildapc

Hey everyone I worked out why my CPU is idling at 90C...

This feel like a really dumb question... but can I lie a PC with a closed-loop liquid cooling system on its side without damaging it?
Not running of course. I need to repaste the CPU block (cause I'm idling at 90C which surely isn't possible on a custom loop...) and its going to be a much better outcome doing it with the CPU horizontal...

Can someone explain the appeal of transparent computer cases to me, or cases with windows, or interior RGB lighting?
To me the ideal PC shape is the NeXTcube. Or if you want a splash of color an SGI Octane or something.
Not criticizing your choices, but like… why do you want to see the dust gathering inside your case all the time lit up by garish colors?
what am I missing (other than a sense of fun and whimsy)?

Where do people buy computer parts now? Newegg used to be my go to, but it seems like they have had a corporate takeover and doesn’t seem like the great deal it used to be. Amazon seems riddled with fake merchants and I’d prefer to avoid them anyway if it’s reasonable.

I'm thinking about making a terrible financial decision and building a PC in the near future.
