  1. Brown Pelican Glide

This brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) had just completed a plunge dive when I snapped this image. Here, the bird is beginning its ascent, wings lifting as it shakes off the ocean’s surface. I followed it with my camera as it climbed higher and higher, gaining altitude with that steady, powerful rhythm pelicans have. A moment later it rose to a good height, banked slightly, and plunged again into the Gulf of Mexico.

  2. Finally going through some photos from a walk along a rocky beach last October, picking out the best wildlife shots. Mostly #birds, including a #curlew, a #BrownPelican and some kind of gull, and a #RedTailedHawk.

I'd actually been planning to hike a trail along the clifftops that morning, but noticed the road down to the beach and thought, "hmm, I'll see where that goes" and by the time I got back to the top it was already lunchtime.

  3. Brown Pelican

I found this pelican down along the ocean in La Jolla in Southern California. The bird was nesting on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. He/she wasn't very far from where I was at but didn't seem to be worried about my presence.
The look in the pelicans eyes was mesmerizing as it looked up at me.

  4. Pelican Paradox

I spotted this brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) at Savannah Beach a few months back. It was quite distant, so I had to crop the image significantly during post-processing, which introduced a noticeable grain. The unusual—but not unwelcome—textures in the pelican’s plumage are the result of noise reduction and enhancement techniques applied to bring out detail and clarity.

  5. The Plunge

While vacationing in Savannah, Georgia, I spent some time at the beach on Tybee Island. Offshore, pelicans were hunting—plunge diving with dramatic precision—and I spent a few minutes trying to capture them in motion. I managed a handful of images, most of which I’ve already shared. This is the last of them.

The pelican was far off in the distance, so the final image turned out looking like a cross between an impressionist painting and a prehistoric cave drawing. I like it, though. It feels both artistic and alive—motion rendered in texture, like a gesture caught mid-thought.

  6. The Quiet Altitude

I figured it was time to step beyond the backyard for a change. This brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) caught my eye at Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia. It was a good distance off, but I’m impressed by how much detail the camera managed to capture. A powerful telescopic lens, a sensor packed with megapixels, and some solid post-processing tools all came together to make it work.

  7. I have a little song I sing this time of year, it goes Ten Thousand Photographs of Pelicans 😀 and yes, here are two of those photographs and one that MIGHT be a stealth whale! I can't tell! I said, Computer, Enhance! and go figure, it didn't help. So I will let you all be the judge of that: whale? Or no whale? It might be two diving pelicans. But I think it is a whale. #photography #pelicans #brownpelican #canonphotography #oregoncoast #birding #wildlife

  9. Poised Above the Deep

Here’s a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) I spotted at Savannah Beach on Tybee Island. I shared another image a few days ago—my goal was to capture them mid-dive. Judging by the activity, there must’ve been a school of fish just offshore. I was hoping to catch one right before it hit the water, but that moment slipped past me.

My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

  10. The Moment Before

While standing on the pier at Tybee Island Beach, I caught this Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) at the exact moment it committed to a plunge-dive for fish. Brown Pelicans are one of only two pelican species known to hunt this way—the other being the larger Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus).

  11. Guardian of the Pier

I captured this striking silhouette of a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) perched on a timber pile, with the beach pier standing in the hazy background at Gulfport, Mississippi.

  13. Nature's Aeronaut

Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) are fascinating to observe. I captured this image as one of these remarkable birds ventured close to the shore in Gulfport, Mississippi. Earlier, I had been watching it farther out, diving for dinner—a truly awe-inspiring sight.

  14. Pelican Squadron in Flight

These are brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) flying offshore at Holly Beach, Louisiana.

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

  16. Sitting in the Morning Sun

In the water off the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi, there are several timber piles, reaching up out of the water a hundred meters or so offshore. Birds use them to rest on, particularly the birds who dive for their food. This silhouetted bird appears to be a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis).

My photo gallery contains more that 900 images that I've chosen to share. Most are there for their visual appeal but there are a few novelty images. You can check out my gallery at:

  18. Over the Sea

I saw these brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) flying away from shore, over the Gulf of Mexico off of Holly Beach, Louisiana.

"The Brown Pelican is a comically elegant bird with an oversized bill, sinuous neck, and big, dark body. Squadrons glide above the surf along southern and western coasts, rising and falling in a graceful echo of the waves. They feed by plunge-diving from high up, using the force of impact to stun small fish before scooping them up. They are fairly common today—an excellent example of a species’ recovery from pesticide pollution that once placed them at the brink of extinction." - allaboutbirds.org
