Bowie's Blackstar at 10 - A Fedi-sourced celebration of a masterpiece
Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 299 on The List, submitted by HillardHouseDan. And because this is a big anniversary for an even bigger album, some Fedi friends have joined me today to collectively share our thoughts on its impact, and our memories of its release. For, on January 8, 2016 – David Bowie’s 69th birthday – Bowie released his 26th studio album, making today the 10th anniversary of the experimental jazz/rock masterpiece ★ aka Blackstar.

The first song that came to mind, probably helped by the recent #BowieADay listening party, was Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, by David Bowie.
It builds up to a crescendo with the refrain:

Today is our last #BowieADay, and so the album is his final, Blackstar (2016), my official entry point to Bowie. However, I really can't handle listening to it today. So instead I'm putting this soundtrack on, the first memory I have of hearing Bowie, both his voice and covers of his songs. Me and my friends were obsessed with Moulin Rouge (2001) when it came out. I got a copy on VHS and the soundtrack on CD, which has both versions of "Nature Boy" Bowie recorded.

After STS, he cut the show short; after the next date, the rest of the tour as he'd had a heart attack and needed an angioplasty.

A few years ago, I was visiting my folks in LA and saw that pianist Mike Garson was backing up Mason Alexander Park on an evening of Bowie/Bowie-related goodies. Yesterday's #BowieADay album was #Heathen, a return to the weird after the relatively straight up offering of hours. Interspersed with the strange are several tracks refracting the tragedy of Sept. 11.
I'd never really gotten into the Pixies, so had to track down the original version of Cactus. Still prefer Bowie's. (Weirdly, this isn't the first time DB covered the Pixies - Debaser was regularly in the set list on the Tin Machine II tour, though it wasn't on any of the live albums.) 1/2 -

Listening to Blackstar now feels different than it did 9 years ago espcecially since now I listened to all studio albums.
I feel a bit like listening to late Queen songs, where Freddie was already terminally ill. Bowie and Freddie have a lot in common while being completely different.
I direct comparison to its predecessors this is a return to more experimental paths, but the truth is, this album covers every aspect of Bowie's career. There are bits and pieces from all his albums.
Blackstar brings up all emotions. It is a the grand finale of an outstanding career.

Towards the end of this career Bowie keeps on getting better and better.
The Next Day, David Bowie's 25th studio album is bloody fantastic, absolutely astonishing!
I am a bit overwhelmed by how good it is honestly. (You Will) Set The World On Fire might as well be my favourite Bowie song. The album currently resides at the #3 spot in my ranking, but it has a strong case for the #2 spot really.
Song 2 gave me strong Tom Waits vibes and hence is my standout track here (next to Set The World On Fire) 👇

The Kinks – Something Else by the Kinks (1967, UK)
As randomly chosen by survey[1] on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 842 on The List, submitted by leodurruti.
If you’re following our #BowieADay schedule, the Bowie album on the docket today is Reality (2003). And TIL the Japanese and tour versions of Reality included a cover of “Waterloo Sunset”, which, also TIL, is the last track on the album we’re looking at here, Something Else by the Kinks. And, again TIL, that studio extra was recorded just a couple weeks prior to a live duet of the song by Bowie and his long-time friend Ray Davies, i.e., frontman of the Kinks, at the Tibet House Benefit in February 2003. To summarize, though “Waterloo Sunset” has been kicking around in my head for decades thanks to Elliott Smith’s fantastic cover, and though I’ve obsessively been listening to Bowie for nearly a decade, today is the first time I’ve listened to Bowie’s cover(s) or to the Kinks’ original. Indeed, today is the first time I’ve listened to an entire Kinks record.
How this happened, I don’t know. I’m familiar with the other big Kinks hits “Lola” and “You Really Got Me”, and I’ve had their next album, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968), on my unwritten list of albums to get to eventually for quite some time. And I knew Elliott Smith’s cover was a cover, one I’ve always loved at that, I just never really bothered to look up who it was a cover of. So when Something Else came up as the next album on The List to spotlight and I saw “Waterloo Sunset” in the tracklist, I went:

It’s a Kinks song!
Wait…Bowie covered it?!
Bowie covered it!
Wait, I thought Village Green was the Kinks album to listen to. Is it going to be a slog to get to “Waterloo”?
By golly it’s not a slog, this is great!And that, friends, is the gift you all have given me and others like me with The List. It’s never too late to fill in those gaps, or to discover moar Bowie.
Also, friends, not sure if this was leodurruti’s intention on submitting Something Else rather than the much-lauded Village Green (which I also listened to for the first time today), but I think this album is possibly better than Village Green? But don’t listen to me, I’m just a newborn baby Kinks fan! And there’s, like, 24 other Kinks studio albums I have to get to now! Anyone up for a deep dive?

The Kinks – Something Else by the Kinks (1967, UK)

Today's #BowieADay album is his 23rd (and 1st of the 21st century), Heathen (2002). This originally was my no. 3 Bowie and is still up there, it has such a great moody vibe. This is perhaps the only one that has personal memories associated with it for me. I just reread a blog post I wrote in Dec 2016, despairing of what had happened the month before and what was to come the following 4 years, quoting lyrics from "Slow Burn". I might as well have written it today. Quoting "Sunday" is also apt.

We are "auf der Zielgeraden" with David Bowie's 23rd studio album "Heathen".
Bowie basically continued where he left things with Hours. Solid art rock/pop which I'd actually call "Bowie Rock". David Bowie is his own genre by now.
I liked it as almost all of his albums. This song stood out for me 👇

We are "auf der Zielgeraden" with David Bowie's 23rd studio album "Heathen".
Bowie basically continued where he left things with Hours. Solid art rock/pop which I'd actually call "Bowie Rock". David Bowie is his own genre by now.

This album never really grabbed me, which might explain why only TIL Bowie originally wanted TLC to be the backing vocals on "Thursday's Child"! (Holly Palmer instead joined the band.) Also, I haven't yet heard any of the original versions that were in the Omikron: The Nomad Soul video game soundtrack (link just added to the blog post). Wonder if Bowie was inspired by Trent Reznor doing the Quake game soundtrack?

David Bowie's 22nd studio album "Hours" is a complete and utter lie. It didn't even take one hour to listen to it, no, it's only 47 minutes long!
But these 47 minutes are very enjoyable. Bowie abandoned all electronic experiments and returned to pop rock, heck even glam rock at parts.
Yes, I liked that, but I missed the experiments a bit. Bowie is unpredictable.

David Bowie's 22nd studio album "Hours" is a complete and utter lie. It didn't even take one hour to listen to it, no, it's only 47 minutes long!
But these 47 minutes are very enjoyable. Bowie abandoned all electronic experiments and returned to pop rock, heck even glam rock at parts.
Yes, I liked that, but I missed the experiments a bit. Bowie is unpredictable.

Today's #BowieADay album is his 21st, Earthling (1997). The day Bowie died, this album was the only Bowie my local record shop had in stock on vinyl. At the time, I had only listened to it once and I rated it as being in my least favourite Bowie albums, and so I didn't bother picking it up. I then kicked myself since it had only been reissued 2x at that point and every copy soon disappeared. It eventually grew on me and I, uh, paid a lot to get a copy. Fave band and cover art (McQueen coat!).

I'm still a day behind with @buffyleigh's #BowieADay. The Outside album was the first DB album that had really excited me since Tin Machine 1, and it's still in heavy rotation. I saw the tour with Nine Inch Nails that year and was floored. I consider it pretty flawless, though Oxford Town and Architects Eyes are probably my favourite songs.
