Rare brumation season appearance from the scaly sausage. Jerry decided to come out of hiding and do a bit of basking just before the timer turned his lights off for the night.
Good to see him as I haven't had a good look at him in weeks. Pleased to see he seems to be in good condition.

Got the blue tongue out of his hide to check on him as I hadn't seen him since he shed, and I wanted to make sure he was OK and didn't have any stuck scales anywhere.
I wasn't sure if he'd be hungry as we're getting into the time of year where he might start brumating and go off his food for a couple of months, so rather than make up a dish of food for him I just offered him dog food still in the tray. It's fair to say he was indeed hungry!

The scaly sausage has been hiding more or less continually for the last couple of weeks. I thought he might be going into brumation a touch early due to the cool nights we had before it was raining all the time, but it seems he was instead preparing to shed his skin. He finally emerged this evening and spent a while rubbing himself on things to get the old skin off and, as usual, eating most of it. There were a few scraps left though, like this bit from his tail.

The long saga of bureaucratic mismanagement that was the renewal of my Companion Native Animal Keeper licence has finally come to a conclusion.
13 1/2 weeks after submitting my renewal application to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service I have now received my new licence. That means that this scaly sausage is legit again, after being held on an expired licence for the past 12 1/2 weeks through no fault of my own.
As noted up thread these types of licences used to be granted automatically within minutes, but then the NSW goverment decided that all animal licence applications needed to be reviewed, but didn't give the NPWS Wildlife Licencing Team the necessary resources to do it. The inevitable result has been months long backlogs of applications awaiting manual processing.

The lizard dug a hole, and is now resting in his hollow log.
One of the big advantages of a "bioactive" reptile enclosure like Jerry's is that it does encourage natural behaviours. Having a soil-like substrate, a layer of leaf litter, and lots of isopods running around prompts Jerry to poke and scratch around in the leaves and dirt like a wild blue tongue would. This is good enrichment for his little lizard brain.

Tempting as it is to give that tail a boop/stroke I must resist, because that is the one and only way to annoy this lizard. Something touching his tail when he's inside his hollow log is the only thing that ever makes him hiss. Even getting some water on his tail while I'm watering the plants down that end of his enclosure will result in him audibly complaining.

Shortly after I bought Jerry a tree surgeon ended up with some natural hollow logs from their work, and decided to offer them up for sale on a local reptile Facebook Group. A rare opportunity, with perfect timing, and it turned out that the logs were an ideal size for Jerry's enclosure.

Meanwhile I've topped up the leaf litter layer in his enclosure, but I think I need to replace at least a couple of his plants too. The ferns down the cool end aren't quite dead yet, but they are not doing well.
Jerry himself has been antisocially hiding away for most of the past week, which I think was preparation for shedding his skin. He seems to be all done with that now, but is still just lurking in his beloved hollow log today.

We have a blue tongue lizard that lives in the garage from spring to autumn each year. It seems to fit through the very small gap between the garage door and the floor.
There are plenty of things it lives under (including the spare fridge) and is smart enough to move out of the way well before the car starts moving.
For non-Australians, Blue Tongues are not poisonous and are not going to kill you.

The scaly sausage came out of winter hiding again yesterday, so have some #LizardPosting
I checked to see if he was hungry with an offering of a couple of blackberries as a treat. He happily ate those and then went roaming around his enclosure looking for more, but I didn't want to give any more food just yet because feeding in winter can cause problems with incomplete digestion.
Since he was feeling active though I decided to get him out for a bit. Naturally this ended up, as it always does, with me with a lizard on my head.

I was pleased to see that he looks to be in good condition. It'll probably still be another month or so before he really comes out of brumation and his activity levels return to normal.

When Jerry is out of his enclosure pretty much the only thing that will stop him constantly trying to wander off to find a nook and/or cranny to hide in is his fleece guinea pig bed. He will, sometimes, just hang out in there, and he may even accept some chin scritches while he's doing so.
