“Pretty little murderers,” Mao announced with glee. She was glad Princess Wind-head had shown her the “baneberry.”

Then, louder: “Congratulations, you did good. I would expect nothing less from the Mushroom Princess.” It was, after all, a name Mai had chosen for herself and was more convenient than “*Princess (Wind Head)*.”

The princess responded to her “praise” with a smile and the proud look of someone who had just bested a root vegetable in debate. Mao resisted the urge to bow.

Humming to herself, Mao returned to the red berries, picked a bunch, and hid them in a fold of her clothes. “Let’s see a busybody find it there,” she said, already planning how to test them. Decocted with something to cut the bitter taste, she decided. Maybe use the *Gān Cao* she had so much of that at the moment. One berry would probably be safe. But just in case, she’d have charcoal and a purgative on hand.

In the meantime, the princess had wandered off. When Mao caught up with her, she was in a stand of tall pines, #blotted here and there with pine fungus. Around her stretched a wilderness garden of mushrooms: gorgeous, freckled, red wind-heads; pale umber matsutake; delicate, fairy-like white caps; and bold, lemony clusters. Ghost-white flowers grew among them, their curved forms reminding Mao of a dragon. Extremely yin…

She glanced up, stopping mid-thought, her breath hissing out, saying, “Idiot!”
