  1. I thought we were clear of ice but the radar showed this #bergoftheday as a perfect L! It is about 3 km long.

  3. right at the limit of my iPhone but this #bergoftheday towered - the one next to it looked normal tabular height (there were a line of them) but this one looked like a tall-ship - probably the last one we'll see this trip. There is the possibility they are one berg. We couldn't convince the skipper to steer closer... 😞 #Antarctica #Tan2502

  5. After a non-eventful day away from the coast recovering some instruments we headed in to Possession Islands - a pretty forbidding set of rocks - so this was the #BergOfTheDay - it looks nondescript but it is grounded and the tide was ripping past and so the ship was swishing back n forth in the wake as we passed by - and those ice caves would occasionally explode with sea spray if a wave timed it right. We are on the hunt for submarine plumes of groundwater/gasses. #ocean #antarctica #tan2502

  7. Slightly different take on #BergOfTheDay - yesterday we found ourselves travelling in blowing snow/mist and this puppy loomed... we were fine as we could see it on radar well ahead. The response time for a ship to turn is not what you would call rapid. #Iceberg #Antarctica #tan2502

  9. #BergOfTheDay although photo taken yesterday as we left Coulman Island Glacier Strait in glorious sunshine and no wind.

Currently its blowing snow and a few 100m visibility max.

  11. #BergOfTheDay - this one was dwarfed by all the bergs around but the colour and the waves breaking with the sun angle were chef's-kiss #Antarctica #oceanography

  13. #BergOfTheDay came through quite early 0630 (img Nicole Hill)... and then later we came through a whole slew of bergs and then a band of sea ice, then penguins... many of the team were seeing these for the first time. So lots of happy, smiling peeps #Antarctica #Iceberg #TAN2502 #Oceanography

  15. First #BergOfTheDay at around 64South. It’s probably around 30m high above the water. Just picture what lies beneath. #TAN2502 #Ocean

  17. Not so much #BergOfTheDay - as bergs everywhere… Cape Adare is just on right and the scene is strewn with giant ice slabs silently drifting by. Each one hundreds of m along on a side - so not big - but still something to avoid. #climate #cryosphere

  19. sorry I've been a bit lazy when it comes to #BergOfTheDay - this fab one came by as we headed in to Robertson Bay 71S 170E - a place I've read about because I've worked on data from there but never visited...

totally amazing as the horizon is filled with peaks and glaciers on one side and bergs, sea ice and sky on the other...

the data are useful as the bay sits at a corner of the #RossSea and acts as a record of change.

  21. #BergOfTheDay was this handsome number... not large but it had character. We head away from the coast and so may not even see bergs except in the far distance for a week or so. #Climate #Oceanography

  23. A loose interpretation for #BergOfTheDay - blowing snow in the lee of the ice of Edward VII Land + a nearby berg... we continue to wait for weather to clear before we head out to the continental shelf break and are surrounded by silent blocks of ice.

  25. #BergOfTheDay - we are heading in towards Cape Colbeck and the ice bergs are coming thick and fast... flotillas of them. The challenge will be getting enough sampling done before we need to make a run before a storm arrives - its not a particularly bad looking storm - but it'd be pointless stuck in it tho as we'd be (a) unable to work AND (b) uncomfortable.
