BC Ferries | BC Ferries announces early start to summer schedule on Route 3

Great article by CBC Meteorologist and Seismologist Johanna Wagstaffe on how BC Ferries watches the weather.
There's an “Operational Limitations Matrix”... ie. deciding Go/No Go based not just on the weather, but on capabilities of each individual ship on the route and the docking points on that route.

Less car-brain #BCFerries experience: @[email protected] bus arrives late and you and a dozen others get left behind because the ticket machines shut off based on *scheduled* departure time. Ferry is a few minutes late, but cashiers can't sell tickets quickly enough. @[email protected] #yyj

Almost Victoria Day Long Weekend!
ie. the “unofficial" start of the summer travel season. So that means, BC Ferries news! 😂This is a good article with good data.
The takeaway for me: there is a big old boat deficit at BC Ferries.
IMO
a) it *should* be fixed.
b) all new ferries should be 100% electric ready.
c) electric terminal infrastructure starting *now*.
d) time to look at fixed links where possible.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-ferries-deep-dive-2026-9.7193809

So, I discovered something today… Since the news bots are posting Quiet Public, that also means any hashtags they post on aren’t broadcast either, so folks looking for hasthtags like #BCFerries or #PortAlberniBC aren’t seeing up the posts. Not sure what to do about this yet. 🫤

in fairness, the headline is a little misleading. The 3rd vessel has been out of the loop for nearly a month as it is docked for its annual refit. It's not scheduled to return until May, so it was never expected to be available for this weekend.

BC Ferry, taken in the fall of 2023. Was not a great trip (health wise), but it sure was nice to be home.

Important anniversary on the BC Coast today. March 22 marked 20 years since the Queen of the North sank.
CHEK News has done a good retrospective including talking to rescuers who were first on the scene.
Our coast is dangerous. It only takes a few minutes of distraction to lead to disaster.
Two people died.
The crew member at the helm was convicted. Another crew member and the Captain were fired.

I told my client the story of how one of my galpals is obsessed with stealing condiment packets from BC Ferries while aboard any BC ferry or inside their terminals. She mostly aims for the Coffee Mate packets but will also stuff her purse/pockets with other condiments & wood/plastic utensils too. Her reasoning is that we pay a lot of taxes & for ferry service fees, so taking extra condiments/utensils won't be hurting the corporation. When she first told me this personal fact, we were in our 30s, en route to Pender Island for a galpals retreat. When we got to her Grandma's cottage there - she dumps out all of her stolen BC Ferries condiments loot. It filled the kitchen table surface 🤣
My client laughed so hard - saying, I can almost picture that scene! Then, he tells me that he is also guilty of pocketing condiments packets from BC Ferries 😂 Telling me, they're useful for when you're traveling/camping & he also figured since we pay a lot for using the government owned ferries, those condiment packets belong to the people. We laughed some more. I admitted that, I'm also a free #condiments pocketer, on #BCFerries. We laughed again 😅
High seas, condiments pirates.
Kind of, but not really. -
