On July 20, 2001, at the peak of the movement against capitalist globalization, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Genoa, Italy to oppose the summit of the world's eight most powerful governments—the G8. During the massive demonstrations that ensued, a police officer shot and killed a 23-year-old demonstrator named Carlo Giuliani.
