  1. A quotation from Alfred Hitchcock

Making a film means, first of all, to tell a story. That story can be an improbable one, but it should never be banal. It must be dramatic and human. What is drama, after all, but life with the dull bits cut out.

Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) English film director
    Interview (1962-08) by François Truffaut

  3. A quotation from Hannah Arendt

The sad truth of the matter is that most evil is done by people who never made up their minds to be or do either evil or good.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist
Life of the Mind, Vol. 1 “Thinking,” Part 3, ch. 18 “The two-in-one” (1977)

  4. A quotation from Ambrose Bierce

ADAGE, n. A hoary-headed platitude that is kicked along the centuries until nothing is left of it but its clothes. A “saw” which has worn out its teeth on the human understanding.

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) American writer and journalist
“Adage,” “Devil’s Dictionary” column, San Francisco Wasp (1881-03-05)

Tall Poppies as seen by a bucket of crabs... in the sun ...

""The sin of progressive ... politics is being on the right side of history too early. ""

"" Why must #Australia be tethered to those who fear, those who are so timorous of the unknown they dedicate their lives to ensuring no one steps outside of the strictures? ""
    ...

"" #Centrist politics benefits no one who doesn’t already hold power.

It proffers *aspiration, a modern-day snake oil*, while moving the “centre” further and further right, telling you *it’s always been there.*

    ... truisms are banal.

Truths shouldn’t need to be sold.

    They should be innate.

And we know when we’ve been sold a lie.

Oftentimes the bravest among us are those who have nothing left to lose. ""

  6. A quotation from Samuel Johnson

That familiarity produces neglect, has been long observed. The effect of all external objects, however great or splendid, ceases with their novelty; the courtier stands without emotion in the royal presence; the rustick tramples under his foot the beauties of the spring with little attention to their colours or their fragrance; and the inhabitant of the coast darts his eye upon the immense diffusion of waters, without awe, wonder, or terrour.

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English writer, lexicographer, critic
Essay (1753-06-26), The Adventurer, No. 67

  7. #Banality and #bigotry;
Well, well, well. #RichardDawkins declared himself a “cultural #Christian” on #Easter, which is no surprise and no big deal. He has been saying how much he likes #Christmas and #church bells for years, so this is absolutely nothing new.

  8. Singer, 1972, proposes charitable acts of #compassion are obligatory, not optional (superogatory). The argument proceeds:

    1. We are morally obligated to prevent bad things from happening to other people.
    2. Hunger disease and suffering are very bad things.
    3. Our luxuries are not meaningful.
    4. Through #charity we can prevent bad things from happening.

Another way to say this is that ordinary people are #evil.

    gotta radicalise🤷‍♀️

considering other things, however, i reckon it an excellent excercise to turn off the lights for an hour after the sunset and ponder about electricity, infrastructure, western lifestyle and dependance on technology, and functional society.#collapse

i fried cheese and mushrooms in candlelight, possibly diluting the idea since i had lights on then, in a way. quite tricky to see whether the amount of pepper was sufficient. #banality #earthhour

  12. @photovince Thank you. We can reach people only thanks to the activity of our followers.

The issue of evil seems to be even more complex. It was not the simple "banality of evil" but something far more dangerous.

People identified and embraced evil, antisemitism, the ideologies of racial supremacy.

The warning of Auschwitz can be used to protect people from this temptation, but in fact education may not be enough.
