วัดมหาธาตุ (Wat Maha That) - Buddhist Temple constructed 1374 A.D. during the reign of King Baramarajadhiraj I, first king of the Suphannaphum dynasty of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
The construction of the main prang (Fig. 1) was enacted during the reign of King Ramesvara I after Baramarajadhiraj I died.
The overall architecture is inspired the Angkorian Khmer architecture but with small modifications.
The main prang degraded over time and crumbled fully around the end of the reign of Rama V of the Chakri Dynasty.

After #Ayutthaya, you also have to see #Sukhothai (Historical Park), which is even more impressive and beautiful. Probably the most inspiring place of our trip. To eat, you simply go to the lokal night market, which takes place around Wat Traphang Thong. You buy what you like from the street stalls and then sit down on one of the many blankets laid out on the riverbank, without shoes of course. Afterwards, you give the place back to others. Magical.

When we travel to another part of the world, we want to learn as much as possible about its history. In the case of #Thailand, this requires a stay in #Ayutthaya (one day is not enough and tourist excursions are out of the question). Here we recommend one café/restaurant that seemed far too posh at first, but delivered sensational food. And they took us in even though we had spent five hours cycling round the ruins of the old city under a sun that knew no mercy.
