  1. Today I’m in a celebratory mood. On one hand, it’s Pride weekend in Berlin, and I’m on my way to the Internationalist Queer Pride march, a valued alternative to the commercialized and pinkwashing-ridden CSD. On the other, all 6 episodes of the first season of my #ActuallyAutistic podcast The Autistic Rant Hour are now online and available to binge.

Being a queer and disability activist doesn’t stop at making sure we have the right to change our names and change or delete our gender markers, to love whomever we choose or have the right to self-determination along with needed support and accessibility measures.
It also means standing up for the rights of people in intersecting struggles: migrant rights, asylum rights, worker rights, bodily autonomy, the right to live free of oppression, eugenics and apartheid, and the right to live at all, in times where folks are hunted down, locked up, denied life-saving medical care, ethnically cleansed and genocided, in more countries than anyone would have believed would still be the case in the 21st century.

My guest on the closing episode of Season 1, Tal’y Wozner (she/her), is the kind of person who understands that and who has always been part of this kind of struggle, resisting intersectionally and challenging preconceptions, both outside and inside queer spaces and discourse. This is why it was such a pleasure and a privilege to have her on the show, even though she isn’t autistic (how dare she!). Tune in to hear us discuss the different challenges of accessing places and services: I from the autistic perspective, and she from the mobility perspective. Together we not only explain the challenges, but also dig into their systemic reasons and reach some conclusions about the meaning of community and how disabled people can be there for each other to make going places more accessible than it, infuriatingly, is.

  2. @[email protected] I just did that autistic thing again, where I present facts to someone, FYI style, trying to offer some help and guidance - without realising that they did not ask me for help, nor were they ready to accept said facts.
Then to make it worse - I did another autistic thing again, where when they respond with anger, but sarcastically - I just think they are joking.
How am I supposed to know they're angry when they look like they're smiling? So, my response was to laugh, like you are supposed to when someone is joking (even if you don't get it) - but then I continue to emphasise the actual facts... as they are still the actual facts, and I felt were important to understand.
💥Then everything suddenly blows up, seemingly out of nowhere!... 💥 Emotion is flying everywhere ..and now I definitely recognise the angry face. 😠
Then I have to spend the next hour playing it all back, and going through the entire thing to work out if it was my fault, and where that fault exactly was.
I did conclude that there was no way for me to know that they would be triggered, and so I can't take responsibility for that. I also can't take responsibility (anymore) for not "reading the room" - in the same way someone in a wheelchair cannot take responsibility for not using the stairs - especially as I now make a point of telling people that I'm autistic.
However, I did try to force help on someone, not ready to receive it, and who didn't ask for it. Something I have done many times before. Just... out of caring really - but a mistake I don't seem to realise until after I've made it.
But, it isn't just that I was forcing something they are avoiding, but I also understand that with neurotypical thinking, trying to help someone who didn't ask for it, can come across as judgemental. As though you are putting yourself on a higher level, as a pretense, to look down upon them - making them feel inadequate.
For me, in my mind, it was just meant FYI, and a subject I know well enough in the details to feel confident enough in relaying that information.
Something that is often problematic for us Autists in many different situations. Where we present simple facts, but which are received with connotations, or with hidden meanings, that we just never meant....

  3. I had a fairly quiet day today. Still recovering from this sinus infection, so I mostly rested. Managed a little study, which felt good. Spent some time pondering things I won’t go into here. Ended the day listening to The Mushroom Case daily podcast.

  4. I'll follow anyone who is nice to me on here since I spent my whole life thinking anyone who was nice to me was my friend even though actual reality etc. #autisticlife

  5. Uni sending an action plan letter to Son 1 (Autistic) because he is having trouble with executive functionning is the worse...
Stress levels are now so high he can't do anything 🙄
I wish they would copy me in every email as we agreed last year!
Any suggestions for him to tackle all this?

  6. Son1 came hurrying down at 7.30 "breakfast in a rush for me!".
I told him the time, he slaps his head "I forgot we changed time!".
He forgot how to put his watch back 1h, fair enough, it happens twice a year...
Long story short, we had a lovely chat shared over breakfast. And he's got time to chill before going to uni.

  7. @actuallyautistics @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic And yet, despite knowing this, it’s so hard to shed the internalised notion of what “productivity” is, as defined by capitalist, NT society/world. I’m feeling this so much now…I can barely function at times, but the guilt of being “useless” is constant. #AutisticLife #AutisticBurnout

  8. @irina @actuallyautistic 😱 Horrendous!

I’ve only confronted a security guard once before, never again. I asked, ‘Why are you following me?’ They folded their arms across their chest and said, ‘Just doing my job’ and glared at me.

I was so flustered I couldn’t think what to say. I turned to leave and they followed so closely behind me if I’d stopped they would’ve walked right into me.

Horribly intimidating but it happens to a lot of us.

  9. @TheOtherness @Vchat20 @Pathfinder @loops @actuallyautistic "Flailing Along" - Accurate description of an #AutisticLife !

When I speak to parents of Autistic children they are desperate for their child to get on a linear pathway to success / employment & fulfilment.

I try to break it to them gently that even the most joyful and supported #Autistic person probably won't do 'linear'; our path is always a winding one, by choice.

And there is nothing wrong with that!

  10. @Fredatron Thank-you for sharing this, I feel the same way so often but we are all so good at hiding it.
The way you describe hesitating at the door of the pub, I have felt that way and only wish I’d known that others did too.
And the ‘I haven’t been to any work-do’s or parties all year, I HAVE to go to this one’ and being really uncomfortable and wishing you weren’t there…💗
    So very relatable. 🙌

  11. @jason_burnett Yes, I agree, it's a great book!

'You Don't Look Autistic At All' by Bianca Toeps is one of the books I recommend for those seeking more about their own #AutisticLife and for non-Autistics to learn about #Autism.

As you say, there is nothing wrong with reading autobiographies of #ActuallyAutistic people. After a lifetime of confusion, it is such a relief to read others #Autistic experience, to feel seen, to have their words resonate so strongly with us!

    Thank-you for sharing!

  12. @theautisticcoach Never swore at all until my early 20’s, now I swear a lot (there’s a lot to be frustrated with! 😤) but not in front of anyone!
Am trying to swear less, but when you are out of spoons, you have chronic pain, your ‘to do’ list is ridiculous, no-one is helping you, CPTSD, ‘ableism’ etc. something has to pop, and if it’s me swearing, then.. 🤷‍♀️

  13. @BlinkPopShift @actuallyautistic Thank-you for saying that, I needed to hear that I'm not alone!

I didn't mention it but we're all #ADHD too so we have #DoomPiles and #ExecutiveDysfunction

I think of it as muddling along as best we can, #NoJudgment and trying to live an #UnmaskedAutistic life at home, even if we can't do it outside the home!

  14. @BlinkPopShift @actuallyautistic I'm being honest, it's really hard. None of us has the #spoons to do what we need to do outside the home, then get all the chores done, cook a meal, and feel like we have the energy to enjoy the evening!

My #recharge time is watching TV or reading a book, not doing chores. But having a family means someone has to do it..
