🚨 BREAKING 📣 Australia's Top News website rankings for March were released today. ABC held No1, newscomau No2 and 🥁 Guardian Australia is the 4th biggest news website in the country for the 4th month in a row. Thanks to the 8.7 million people who visited GdnAus, nearly 40% of the entire online population 🙏
As you can see from all that green in the table, it was a huge month of news. Just four of the Top20 publishers lost audience in March – Yahoo, NYT, The West and SkyNewsOz. DailyMail had the biggest raw (+1.17m) and percentage (+23%) growth in the Top20, with ABC not far behind on +1.14m, helping them to a clear 1m+ audience lead over newscomau in 2nd. SBS and GdnAus were near-identical with audience growth of +869k and +868k, respectively, but for SBS that was a 20% lift and they leapfrogged The Age and Yahoo News back into the Top10 at No9.
The AFR has moved up five positions, to 14th in the rankings, while SkyNewsOz tumbled six positions to 19th, losing half a million readers between February and March. This is the first time in history that Guardian Australia has been ranked 4th or higher for four months in a row 👏and it extends our record run to nine consecutive months where Guardian Australia has been ranked 5th or higher.

📣 BREAKING 📯 Australia's Top News website rankings for February were released yesterday. ABC held No1, newscomau No2 and 🥁 Guardian Australia is the 4th biggest news website in the country for the 3rd month in a row. Thanks to the 7.8 million Australians who visited GdnAus in February 🙏
This is the first time in history that Guardian Australia has been ranked 4th or higher for three months in a row 👏 and it extends our record run to eight consecutive months where Guardian Australia has been ranked 5th or higher. It's a mixed bag in the rankings on audience gains and losses, with GdnAus the most steady in the Top20, down just 0.3%. Traditionally you'd expect February to be lower, with fewer days in the month. All other things being equal, and wildly fluctuating news agendas notwithstanding, you could generally expect a 10% lower volume of referral traffic between a 31-day and a 28-day month.
The top five rankings are unchanged, but probably the most noteworthy move is BBC News, up another two spots to No8, and dangerously close to overtaking DailyMail at No7. On that note, DailyMail dropped a massive 1.1m readers from January to February. From where they were to now, their decline is almost inexplicable. The other big move is SBS News, dropping 600k readers and out of the Top10.
The biggest gains in February came from The Conversation +846k readers (+36% MoM) and 9News +844k readers (+9% MoM). Also noteworthy is SkyNewsOz with the third biggest growth in the month, +621k readers and +3 spots in the rankings. That's absolutely huge for the Conversation. Not in the Top20 at all in January, and ranked 15th in February with an audience of 3.2m. The Conversation was last in the Top20 (at No20) in September last year with an audience of 2.8m.

🚨 NEW 📈 Australia's Top News website rankings for January have been released. ABC News held No1, NewsComAU No2 and 🥁 Guardian Australia is the 4th biggest news website in the country – again! Thanks to the 7.9 million Australians who visited GdnAus in January 🙏
This is the first time in history that Guardian Australia has been ranked 4th or higher two months in a row 👏 and it extends our record (PB) run to seven consecutive months where Guardian Australia has been ranked 5th or higher. If you want to read more about the rankings, Mumbrella posted about it, leading on Daily Mail losing 2.5m readers year on year.
The large amount of audience loss (red) for most publishers in the table is down to the fact that December was a very big news month, with Australia's worst ever terrorist attack at Bondi beach. The big audience drops in January are mostly a return to standard – and are normal to see around a big news event – rather than an indication of publishers unexpectedly losing huge audiences.
In the Top10, only SBS News and Yahoo News saw audience growth, which is great for them because they were some of the few publishers to lose audience in December. That lift for SBS saw them jump from 11th in December to 8th in January, at the expense of The Age, who were pushed out of the Top10. After dropping out of the Top20 in December, Herald Sun have come back in at 18, while TheNightly and Forbes, respectively ranked 16th and 17th in December, are out of the Top20 in January.
The biggest audience growth in a month of mostly large losses, was SBS's +387k readers. The biggest drop in audience was 7News's -882k readers, with The Australian (-849k) and Daily Mail (-836k) not far behind. The West Australian had the biggest audience growth in December with +1m readers, and have done exceptionally well in January to lose just -43k of those.

🚨 BREAKING* 📈 Australia's Top News Website rankings from December came out on Friday, and Guardian Australia is now the 4th biggest news website in the country. Grateful to the 8.4 million Australians who visited GdnAus in December 🙏
Will keep this very brief, since I'm still on holidays, *and not quite breaking since it's Saturday morning that I'm posting it, when the numbers came out Friday morning. But I'm on holidays, so ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In brief, ABC News takes back the No1 spot from newscomau, and that by a decent margin. GdnAus continues its own record run in the rankings – now ranked 5th or higher for six consecutive months (extending on from the record five months set in the November rankings). Almost all publishers up on audience, some by very large amounts, and quite a bit of that around coverage of Australia's worst ever terrorist attack, at Bondi Beach on 14 December.
The Age and BBC News back into Top10 at No10 and No8, respectively. Forbes and SkyNewsOz have reappeared in the Top20, but the Herald Sun has dropped out.
The biggest audience growth in the month was for The West Australian with a huge 1m readers more than they had in November. SMH had the second biggest audience growth in December with +952k readers, and GdnAus third with +926k readers.

It's news website rankings day! The figures for Australia's top news websites in July are out, so… who is up, who is down, and is anyone down and out (of the Top 20)?
The first thing you'll see is a lot of green growth! Where in the June rankings all but one (1) of the Top 20 were shaded red – prompting frankly unnecessary angst and doomsaying – in July two-thirds of publishers saw growth, with just two of the Top 10 here experiencing a month-on-month drop in audience.
ABC took No1, newscomau 2nd, and Guardian Australia had the 5th biggest audience in Australia 💪 ahead of DailyMail (!) and SMH.
Massive thanks to the 7.4 MILLION Australians who read Guardian Australia in July 🙏
Where most other publishers saw some growth in July, DailyMail lost another 611k readers (on top of their -246k readers in June) and dropped two rankings from 4th to 6th. That saw 7News and Guardian Australia rise one spot each. The Age had a huge month, adding 780k readers and jumping two spots to take 9th in the Top 10.
7News added a remarkable 1m readers in July to go to 8.5m readers. Worth noting that, after losing -576k readers in May and another -565k readers in June, this was essentially a return to where they'd been in April.
I wouldn't be surprised if a decent amount of The Age audience uplift came from Apple News. Their coverage of the Victoria childcare abuse case and the Erin Patterson trial got a LOT of play in Apple News Top Stories through the month.
What else? BBC News lost 453k readers but only dropped one ranking, out of the Top10 to 11th. Courier Mail had a strong month, rising 5 spots to 15 from 20th. But SkyNewsOz dropped to 19th and The Nightly dropped back out of the Top20.

Australia's Top 20 news website rankings for February are out this morning. Big thanks to the 7.5 million Australians who read Guardian Australia last month 🙌
ABC News held No1 with 12.4m readers, with newscomau 2nd with 12.2m
GdnAus dropped -430k readers, but still held 6th spot 652k readers clear of SMH on 6.88m. Despite a small audience drop, Age overtook BBC to jump into Top 10. Keep in mind the month was 3 days (-10%) shorter as well!
Elsewhere in the Top20, The Australian jumped two spots in the table to 12th, overtaking NYTimes, while Forbes dropped 5 spots to 18th and SkyNewsOz was down two spots to 17th.
NIH weirdly reappears at 13th with a huge 810k readers added in Feb, but maybe the big news is The Nightly making their first ever appearance in the Top 20.
CourierMail are also back in Top20 for the first time since Oct last year, with DailyTele & Fox Sports dropping out
I might add that I am particularly pleased to see Guardian Australia's attention time (average minutes per person) up at 20mins here, which is the highest it's been since Oct/Nov last year, but would put us at 4th if you sorted the Top20 on that measure.

#BREAKING NEWS: It's the Top 20 news website rankings in Australia for January! Massive thank you to the 7.96 MILLION Australians who read Guardian Australia last month 🙌👏
ABC News surged back to No1 with +731k readers to reach 12.48m, as newscomau dropped to No2 on 11.76m after losing -413k readers in the month.
Guardian Australia added +651k readers to hold 6th 💪 with 7.96m, 1.25m readers ahead of SMH at No7, who dropped -266k readers in January. And only 200k readers behind 7News in 5th! That's normally about a 2m audience gap.
DailyMail added +936k readers in January, on top of their +1.1m in December, to now be ranked No4, and up an astonishing 2m readers since they recorded 6.6m readers in November. That Nov measure had them 650k readers behind Guardian Australia and below us in the rankings at No7.
Huge months for SBS News and BBC, with both adding more than 800k users in January to take top10 spots at the expense of The Age and NY Times. All NewsCorp properties in the Top20 lost audience, with newscomau -413k, The Australian -279k, SkyNewsOz -169k, Herald Sun -222k and DailyTele -377k
