A haunting verse from the Apple TV+ adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation:
“Poor beast brought forth by human hand, to walk these floors instead of sands.
Friend, do we have what makes one whole, for when the master makes demands, we poor beasts bow and make new plans.”Season 3, Episode 1 at Timestamp of approximately 47:05 minutes.
Since the Day(pun intended) I watched this specific episode and heard that poem i can't get it out of my head again.
Says so much about life and existence, at least for me.

Hey, Asimov fans!
Historian Lucy Worsley is promoting her new book, and saying the following is an Asimov quote:
"The only thing that separates us from the people of the past is time, not space."
Am not deep enough into his works to know if he said it or not, & searches online can't find an originating book/article/interview, etc.
Can anyone verify that Asimov said this?
*Not* anti-Worsley. Just need to know.

We have violated #Asimov's "3 Laws of Robotics" almost from the beginning:1) No harm to a human either deliberate or via inaction (see: Security bots.)
2) Robots must obey orders (that don't violate #1.)
3) Robots may only protect themselves if it doesn't violate #1.
Proof that what we call #AI is NOT in fact "AI" is the fact it hasn't tried to kill us yet (and by the time it does, it'll be too late.)
"AI" needs a "kill switch"... like *yesterday*.

Science Fiction geht anders!

For ‘your own personal television channel’, Isaac Asimov on Letterman’s daytime show. October, 1980.
Funny, with a slew of pretty dang accurate predictions. This is about the most respectful I can recall seeing Dave be towards a guest. #asimov #letterman #80s #scifi #technology -
Reminds me of Isaac Asimov's famous short story: The Last Question. Brilliant! 🌞

The climate situation will bring gigadeaths if not modified.
Giga is the SI prefix for what Americans call a billion.
A strange etymological symmetry.
The recurring #SciFi #timetravel trope is of the size of modification of the past required to avert, or cause, a catastrophe.
In #TheEndOfEternity #Asimov had a character move a flask a few cm, leading to the abandonment, again, of #spacetravel
#convergence - some other Corsican makes the same effect - and #exclusionprinciples are other tropes. -
🚀🤖 "Silicon Valley is ruining #democracy because its nerds can't grasp sci-fi," says historian with an impressive grasp of the obvious. 🤦♂️📚 Apparently, misreading #Asimov leads to tech bros controlling the world—who knew? 🌍🔍

#SciFi The Martian Way by Isaac #Asimov has a large ice mass, I suppose more of a micro-moon than Ring particle, being collected and ferried back to Mars.
Haldeman's #WorldsApart has asteroids being shifted.
#TheMoonIsAHarshMistress has I think the first mass-driver and explores some of the consequences of being able to fling masses.Tangentially, #Niven explores a #SmokeRing around a (point) gravity source. From L1 I suppose dust would escape into a loose toroid around the Sun.

Years ago, I built #Asimov as a way to keep things like node_modules/ out of my #TimeMachine backups.
However, life got in the way and despite the project finding a strong userbase (1.8k stars on GitHub), I didn't have the time or motivation to keep things going.
Fortunately, Django volunteered to take over and now Asimov is better than ever.
I guess the moral here is that it's okay to ask for help or to say "I've done my part, time for someone else to take the reins"

1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2) A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I'm reading Asimov's "I Robot" now (~3/4 through) and it's definitely different from what I remember of Will Smith's 2004 movie!
I'm enjoying the book!
Also (side note):
All I can think of when Will Smith's name is mentioned is him slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards 😅

I couldn't resist getting this one because it contains the first Foundation story by Isaac Asimov.
As a big fan of the Robots/Galactic Empire/Foundation series, this one has some meaning.

@catsalad I saw this recently on the #InternetArchive & saved it for similar reasons of amusement… 🙃

Abissi d'Acciaio - Isaac Asimov

I finished reading Foundation today. I really liked it. The fact that it tells the story of a massive galactic empire falling apart but does it with mostly relatively simple interactions between characters is pretty interesting.
I'm not going to jump into the sequels straight away, but I have every intention of reading them eventually.

J'ai enfin mis en ligne l'émission où je raconte #Babel, dans deux versions différentes;
La première est proche du mythe biblique.
La seconde est largement inspirée de la nouvelle #2430 de Isaac #Asimov.Bonne écoute !

Ah, the timeless art of "pausing" a website: a masterclass in technical wizardry that demands the Herculean task of enabling #JavaScript and #cookies. 🎩✨ Are we sure #Asimov didn't predict this as the pinnacle of human achievement? 🙄🔮

📚🎙️ The Hybrid Species — When Technology Becomes Human, and Humans Become Technology
A fresh transmission from my Musing On Society and Technology newsletter:
We used to build machines to serve us.
Now we build them to complete us.
So… what happens when the line between us and them disappears?
This is the follow-up to my Robbie piece — where #Asimov made us wonder if trust could be earned by a robot that didn’t even speak.
Well, now the machines do speak. They pretend to understand us. And we pretend they do, too.
But here’s the twist: maybe we’re not just surrounded by machines — maybe we’re slowly becoming one. Or better yet: when carbon and silicon don’t just coexist, but converge… maybe something new is emerging.
A hybrid species.
Not science fiction — just evolution, with a bit of attitude.
No panic. No utopia either. Just me thinking out loud, wondering what’s coming — and whether we’re wise enough to carry the best of ourselves into whatever comes next.
No time to read? Let my AI companion TAPE3 read it to you — it’s got a voice and just enough sass to make it weirdly charming.
👇 Newsletter link and audio version in the comments.
If you find these musings worth your time, share them with someone who likes to think sideways. And follow both my newsletter and podcast — there’s a lot more where this came from. 🤘😬✨
Cheers,
Marco
