3. Bartók/Beethoven/Schönberg by #AnneTeresaDeKeersmaeker.

I’ve said it before: I’m not a ballet girlie. Boring! Three of De Keersmaeker’s older pieces set to the composers in the title. The first was the best: four women in a playful, girlish performance, dressed all in black, sometimes flashing their white granny panties. The second brings out the mens but turns up the ballet a little more; I was still able to enjoy it though. The third was the most traditional with a little hairography and the usual gendered crap of story ballet. Clearly I (don’t care to) know anything about old school ballet, but the third piece felt out of place.

Didn’t know what to expect from a two-hour concert that started at 10 PM, but one way to remain awake while still jet-lagged was not to have any seating. I looked around at all the elderly people mixed in with a younger crowd and was even more confused. Then the performance started:

multi-layered, short
measures of music repeat
hypnotic pulses

I love live music. The lighting, the way people start moving or dancing unconsciously. While familiar with Philip Glass, I’m not with Reich. This was incredible. And inexplicably, the second half of the concert was a DJ set by ROLROLROL. WTF? I was just talking about wanting a club experience without the club and here it was, the closing night of Flanders Festival Ghent. An older couple, looking like the DJs grandparents, sat on stools right next to the booth as young people danced all around them.
