  1. Version 0.23.3 of #Lisien, which manages the rules and world state of your #Maxis-style sim game, fixes the Android build.

    Get it on itch: clayote.itch.io/lisien/devlog/

Or in your Python interpreter: python -m pip install -U lisien elide

  2. Xenobot (Microbiology 🦠)

Xenobots, named after the clawed frog, are synthetic lifeforms that are designed by computers to perform some desired function and built by combining together different biological tissues. There is debate among scientists whether xenobots are robots, organisms, or something else entirely.

  3. For what I'm reading now the system I've independently developed is closest in spirit to Reservoir Computing, Artificial Life, and Agent-Based Modeling, and to a certain extent, to the broader field of Decentralised AI. It shares their focus on emergent behaviour from local interactions, but it's differentiated by its lack of explicit learning mechanisms, optimisation goals, and symbolic reasoning, making it a distinct kind of complex system simulation rather than a direct mapping to any AI technique.

The core idea is using dynamical systems, with their own complex local rules and interactions, to observe the system-level behaviour. It's a simulation model designed to explore a particular set of dynamics rather than a direct implementation of a learning model. This makes it a valuable tool in complex systems research, even if it is independently developed and not aligned with the mainstream of modern AI techniques.

The animation shows it's stable after 30000 cycles, with no new energy injected into the system.

  4. Peter Watts refs his second novel #Maelstrom as he discusses emergence of self-replicating patterns from random strings in various computing environments but I had memories of #CoreWars floating through my head as I read it all.

    From the quoted article:
We show that when random, non self-replicating programs are placed in an environment lacking any explicit fitness landscape, self-replicators tend to arise.

  5. Someone said to me at an Artificial Life conference: "You *have* to read this book, it's about what you do!" (I got into Artificial Chemistry after this book came out but without having read it yet.)

@gregeganSF Was there a paper on Artificial Chemistry that inspired this book?

  6. Apakah #AI akan menggantikan posisi manusia?

    Mungkin tidak ❌ menggantikan

Tapi #AI akan menggeser peran #manusia, kita masih diperlukan tapi untuk hal yang lain

  7. I got interested in #BiologicallyInspiredComputing when I learned about #ArtificialLife #ALife. At that time the computing resources available were limited compared to today. Now we have #DeepNeuralNetworks #DNN but it is widely agreed (including by me) that they do not replace natural #cognition. #BiologicallyInspiredComputing can be used as an application technology, but how do we use #Computing to understand #Cognition?

  8. #introduction

I'm an associate professor at ELSI in Tokyo. I'm into #ComplexSystems, #ArtificialLife, #OriginOfLife and #AppliedCategoryTheory.

Lately I'm really into the question of "what is an agent" and the foundations of Bayesian reasoning and decision making. This means my interests overlap quite a bit with the #aialignment crowd, although my main motivation is understanding where agency came from in biology.

  9. One possibility for reducing the computational cost of simulating the long enzymes is to allow 'compaction'. We change the physics of the world to permit multiple atoms to occupy the same square, under some conditions. For movement we can then treat the atoms in a square as a single entity.

Left shows a cell with the original physics. Right shows the same cell with compaction allowed.

  10. Previous papers showed that it is possible to wrap this whole assembly into a cell that can copy itself and compete for resources with others.

The challenge now is to find a way to simulate this kind of system fast enough that we can watch it evolve.
