Apparently Arkansas keeps getting negative national and even international attention - this time over recent changes that relax child labor laws. Yet another reason I tell people to relocate elsewhere if at all possible. We have plenty of good folks who are trying to fight the good fight, but the fight is rigged from the outset.

Turns out that Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and an infamous former Governor from our state (Orval Faubus) used a lot of the same rhetoric about "school choice" - something to remember as school districts serving the least privileged get hurt the most. Vouchers will be the death knell for a number of districts here.

If you're ever curious to know how ridiculous my state's (Arkansas) legislature is, here is a good rundown. It's mostly ugly. But hey, these clowns can claim they "owned the libs" while hurting their own voters as well.

I can't say I'm surprised that the lawsuits would start up, and the session hasn't even ended. We haven't had governing in AR in ages (certainly since I moved here). Placing added restrictions on the voter initiative process is undemocratic and unconstitutional (AR state constitution). We'll see what the judges start saying soon enough.

Legislators have been trying for some time to limit the ability of citizen initiated initiatives to get successfully placed on the ballot. Over the last couple electoral cycles, they've tried to get us to voluntarily agree dispensing with that right. That failed, so time for a different (albeit probably unconstitutional approach).

Sadly, it's getting more difficult to be transgender in my state as well. The bill will most likely eventually pass, but it's making me more determined to get any of my kids who don't identify with their sex at birth to move out of here and somewhere safer ASAP.

Needless to say, it looks like the Arkansas public schools will take a considerable hit. Funding that would have gone to improving public schools will go instead to vouchers that will benefit the relatively wealthy Arkansans. On the one hand, I am so glad my youngest is graduating in a matter of months. On the other hand, I am deeply concerned about the blowback those of us in higher ed and industry will face.

Arkansas SB43 is still a very bad bill. I'm no legal eagle, but I get the feeling it'll end up challenged in court even if someone did try to enforce it. Then again, my state's legislators have never been known for their lawmaking skills.

Senate Bill 81, which was introduced by state Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro), is too vague and could someday mean that libraries are no longer refuges for children, a high school library media specialist said Tuesday.

A bill sponsored by Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) in front of the Arkansas state Senate Judiciary Committee could leave library and school employees criminally and civilly liable for lending items that are already illegal for them to have available for loan.
The committee is set to meet Wednesday at 10 a.m.
