I got to see these guys, and many other wolves again today. I didn't go in any enclosures, but did make my rounds. This was on my way out, and I think it was the first time I've heard them howl.

When I took this and other wildlife images from a car, after many years of hiking and canoeing to photograph wildlife, it made me rethink a lot of things. I still prefer wilderness camping and hit and miss with wildlife, but this is a lovely park to visit, especially in those heavy, Charlie-Brown-Christmas-snowflake snowfalls. Most of this park requires people to stay in cars, they do have areas with free-roaming elk, red deer, boar...

CW: re: Eye contact, wolves
They were recently moved to a new, larger enclosure. Actually, they were swapped with the two wolves in there (a mother and son), who are now in a smaller enclosure, which is still large enough.
The arctics now have two ponds, and a lot of forest. You actually can't or don't notice the fence in some parts of it, and it's just like walking through the forest with the four wolves following you around.

CW: Eye contact, wolves
Okay, here is a wolf update. The ones pictured here were not involved with my previous post, but I just happened to get some pictures. The white ones, the arctic wolves, are doing well. They're enjoying their new, bigger enclosure, but stick together. You can see their personalities develop, which is interesting. One is more bold, and will sometimes check out something new and then go get the others.
The other two wolves here, the tan ones, are brother and sister timber wolves. Their trees here got trimmed, but they still have shade, and of course the wholes they dug which they like to lay in. They have about four acres, but like to lay there and people-watch.

Our four arctic wolves got moved to a bigger enclosure, and now have over nine acres. They were swapped with another two, which should give both packs new space to investigate. The arctics are younger, and the space plus having two ponds will be great for them.
They are siblings, three brothers and one sister, and still more or less stick together. They have a lot of space to explore, but still came to see me when I stopped by.

A few more pics (one here also includes eye contact). There's also a picture of one of the platforms we have for them; all the enclosures have some sort of shelter and a platform.
There's another shelter, more like a small shed or doghouse, which they've been digging under. It's partly a den-digging instinct, but they also go there to cool off. We have other structures with space underneath they can easily access, and the animals love going there to get some shade.
-
We went in with the arctic wolves today. Here one is demonstrating extreme stealth - you hardly notice him at all behind the tree. (One image contains eye contact.)
They're getting more and more comfortable with staff and visitors. When we go in they'll get relatively close, although there are only a few people they come right up to. They will hand around closeby, and when you get up to move they go and sniff around where you were sitting or anything you touched.
-
I didn't get to see many animals, but I did go say hi to the puppies. Actually they're over a year old at this point, but they're still the youngest there. They don't really have their winter coats anymore, and so although they're arctic wolves they seemed to be doing better in the heat than I was. (Though they were taking it easy, of course.)
There were also some tadpoles in the pond, hanging around the shallower water of an overflow area.

It was very sunny today, but not too bad if you could get to the shade. It was cooler, and there was a breeze. The #wolves did okay for the most part, although toward the end of the day many were taking it easy and heading toward the shade.
The arctics were out and about and, seemed to have the least bits of winter coat left. They're getting bolder too, and getting closer to me and other staff. This morning they got some raw eggs and dog kibble as a treat, which they seemed to like - I think the middle one in the picture with three his has nose down looking for some stray bits of it.
-
Our four arctic wolves are doing well. They're less shy now, and were out and about with a bunch of us in their enclosure. They've also been approaching the fence with visitors present more. They're a little over a year old.
-
Here are the four of them out and about before we opened.
-
These four are about a year old at this point. They're still shy, and retreat further back into their enclosure when there are visitors, but they're coming out more and more.
A bunch of staff members were in with them today. They have a few favorite people they'll come up to, but they're still not quite sure of me. They will follow the humans they're less familiar with at a distance, and sniff everything we've been in contact with after we've left.
We have the two layers of fencing, one to contain the animals, the other shorter one to keep the humans out. I'm usually taking pictures through the fence since I'm not always up to taking out my phone when inside the enclosures - I don't want one of the older wolves to swipe it, and these four don't always get close enough to take a good picture anyway.
-
The puppies are doing well. They're getting bigger, around 70 or 80 lb, and are starting to warm up to strangers a little bit. Actually there're still a little shy, and you kind of have to wait a while before they come out if there's a crowd of people. But they were kind of curious about me while I was walking by the fence this morning.

CW: Wolves, eye contact
The puppies are getting bigger, and are starting to warm up to people. Still shy, but they're coming up to the fence a little more.
-
I've posted pictures of #puppies before, I don't actually have any new ones from today but me and some other staff members went in with them. They warmed up to a couple people, but are still kind of timid around some of us. That said, I think it just needs time.
The picture below is actually from a couple weeks ago.
-
Also, the #puppies are getting bigger. The have a bigger enclosure now. As I left the other wolves were howling (I think because of the storm), and these four were listening. I haven't heard them howl myself yet, but they're trying.

CW: Eye contact, puppies
Some #wolf #puppy pictures from yesterday. I was up to work on the batteries, and we were closed to the public. So aside from some staff members no humans were there. That combined with it being cooler meant the animals were a little more perky.
These three are about 12 weeks old right now. They're very curious, and doing well.

CW: Near-eye contact, wolf puppies
I was out of town this week, so no new #wolf pictures. Here are a couple more #puppy pics from last week.
The adult wolves were of course quite interested. These puppies will be on their own, as in we're not going to put them in with any others anytime soon. This may happen at some point, if it makes sense. For example, if we end up with a single wolf in need of a companion, or if one of them ends up getting picked on by the others. But in the mean time, the other animals are aware of them, and are quite protective even from their own enclosures. We have to be careful to make sure there aren't too many visitors in the area, so we don't stress them out too much.
