“Tadpoles: The Big Little Migration”

Amphibians like toads are often indicator species for their ecosystem because they are vulnerable to changes on both land and water. In this short film, videographer Maxwel Hohn follows the migration of western toad tadpoles in British Columbia, showing their daily underwater journey from deep waters, where they can hide, to warmer, shallow waters, where they eat. Over the days and weeks of their early life, millions of tadpoles make the journey, their bodies morphing as they do. Eventually, they will hop away as toadlets. (Video and image credit: M. Exciting #frogpond update. After a few false starts, we definitely have legs now. Saw this #froglet zipping around. Looks like a #StripedMarshFrog. Also still have some #tadpoles who are not making the leap into froghood yet. They have really grown up.

I haven't posted about #tadpoles lately because I haven't seen them in ages. Maybe they turned to frogs while I was away, or the pond turned inhospitable. I like to think they're frogs.

I have a lot of work to do to get this pond ready for the next generation. And no more water celery.

#tadpole news: a couple of them died, one got almost completely eaten by its siblings by the time I found it. The rest is healthy, agile and eating a lot. They seem to like cucumbers and spinach, lettuce not so much. Also fed them egg yolk, not sure if it was eaten or dissolved into mud…

And because some already have four legs, added a rock for dry land, and saw two sitting on it. I guess I will have to start hunting for small insects…

#tadpoles update: I took inventory, we have about 50 tadpoles, they seem to be of the same species. Most of them already have tiny hind legs, some larger ones, one or two have front legs too. Seems like they will need some sort of dry land soon.

Fed them with boiled spinach and lettuce, which they seem to like, now they all have green bellies and pooping green non stop:)

Passed by an almost dried up puddle full of tadpoles on today’s bike ride, and I could not resist rescuing a bunch of them in a small bottle. They survived the trip and are happily feeding on cooked cucumber in a small aquarium that has been vacant in the last 15 years (last inhabitants were tree frog tadpoles).

#paludarium update: (sorry for the blurry photos, my phone is steadily breaking and there are scratches on the camera lens so it's hard to take clear photos...) the plants and #tadpoles are doing well, some of them are getting quite large, like the bulbous head part is larger than my pinkie fingernail. The #salamander larvae aren't doing quite as well--I can't seem to keep them alive as long, and they tend to have the ends of their tails missing, so I'm worried the larger tadpoles are eating them. Still, there are three or four still in there, and one of them is pretty large (almost the same size as the largest tadpole). It's interesting watching their differing metamorphosises...the frog and toad tadpoles grow back legs first then much later grow front legs, lose their tail then lose their bulbous shape, while the salamanders grow teeny tiny front legs first, as well as the cheek gills that make them look like axolotls until they go on land. I'm excited to see how they do once they're exploring the land, though it means I'll have to switch up their diet, and finding bugs small enough for newly metamorphized froglets and sallies is difficult 😅

My pond is going strong. Saw this chubby tadpole out basking at the surface. Even better, there were about five tadpoles deeper down swimming about. No legs visible, so I wonder if this taddy is growing slow or maybe I saw a fast developer last time.

To be honest though, I am a bit worried about how still this little one was. I'll have to keep an eye on the pond and make sure it goes back to swimming with the rest soon.
